Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sigiriya Lion Rock is the site of a palace in the sky built atop a nearly 200m-high orange-red giant rock. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa I built the royal palace on the summit, and during his 18-year reign, he completed this complex that integrates a palace, gardens, and a fortress. It was later lost in the jungle for a long time until it was rediscovered in modern times, and today it is a representative monument in Sri Lanka's Cultural Golden Triangle. The entire site unfolds layer by layer from bottom to top. At the foot of the mountain are symmetrical water gardens surrounded by a moat. The ancient water system was ingeniously designed, and the fountains can still spout water by gravity during the rainy season. A pair of giant lion paws halfway up the mountain are the remains of the lion-shaped palace gate from that time. The brick lion body and head have long since collapsed and weathered, and now one can only imagine its former grandeur from the stone steps between the paws. Upon reaching the summit, the platform retains the ruins of the palace and reservoirs. Looking out from the height, the jungle and distant mountains are all in view.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Parkis located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, situated between the two ancient cities of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and is one of Sri Lanka's well-known wildlife viewing destinations, covering an area of approx. 90 square kilometers. The park features a rich natural environment, where forests, shrublands, and lakeside grasslands interweave, creating a diverse tropical ecological view. Dense woodlands provide habitats for wildlife, while open grasslands serve as important areas for animals to forage and roam. With the changing seasons, the park's waters, vegetation, and grassland views also present different appearances, making it full of natural charm. The lake surface reflects the surrounding green vegetation, and the lakeshore is open with good visibility, making it a representative natural view of the park. The lake and the surrounding terrestrial ecosystems are interconnected, together forming the park's unique wetland and grassland environment.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla Cave Temple is a famous Buddhist cave temple in Sri Lanka, carved into a massive rock rising over 100 m above the plains. Legend has it that in the 1st century BC, King Valagamba took refuge here for many years to escape invaders. After regaining his throne, he converted the caves into a Buddhist temple. Subsequent kings continued to expand and renovate it, gradually forming the current layout of five interconnected caves. The caves preserve over 2,000 square meters of murals painted with natural pigments like tree sap, as well as more than 150 statues. The themes are mostly related to the life of the Buddha. Monks still practice here today, so it is not merely a display site.

Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala Rock is a large rock north of Sigiriya Rock. Its height and structure are very similar to Sigiriya Rock, making it an excellent spot to view Sigiriya Rock from a distance. Climbing Pidurangala Rock takes about 45 minutes, and the entrance is at the temple of the same name at the foot of the mountain. The temple houses several ancient caves and Buddha statues. Start climbing the stairs from the temple until you see a reclining Buddha. After that, the stairs disappear, and you need to walk along a small path for a few dozen m, then climb over a pile of boulders to reach the summit platform. Climbing the boulders is somewhat difficult; if you encounter a difficult spot, please look for an alternative path nearby. The view from the top is excellent, offering a distant view of Sigiriya Rock and the surrounding jungle. Lying on the boulders, feeling like the only person in the world, is incredibly pleasant.
