Piazza del Duomo

91 reviews
Piazza del Duomo is located in the heart of the historic center of Florence, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982. The square has been the city's religious center since the Middle Ages. In the late 13th century, surrounding residential buildings were demolished to build the new cathedral and bell tower, and it was gradually expanded over the following centuries to its current size. The square brings together three iconic buildings: theCathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Bell Tower, and The Baptistery of San Giovanni. Together, they form the "Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore complex," showcasing the evolution of architectural art in Florence from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The dome designed by Brunelleschi stands over 90 m high and is a striking visual focal point on the square's skyline. Historic buildings such as the Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral Museum, and the Bigallo Museum are also located around the square. Standing in the center of the square and looking around, the facades of buildings from different eras and styles complement each other, making it a key location for experiencing the urban landscape of Florence.Florence · 26.6km from Vinci

Piazza della Signoria is the political heart of Florence and an open-air sculpture gallery. The square is "L"-shaped, with the jagged tower of the Palazzo Vecchio serving as its constant visual focal point. It is surrounded by Renaissance buildings such as the Loggia dei Lanzi and the Uffizi Gallery, while the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is just a short walk away through the alleys. The sculptures displayed in the square are a veritable open-air history of Renaissance sculpture. A replica of Michelangelo's "David" stands at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio; the original was moved to the Gallery of the Academy of Florence in the 19th century. To the right of the square is the Fountain of Neptune created by Ammannati, featuring a white marble statue of Neptune standing on a chariot drawn by horses in the center, surrounded by bronze mythical creatures. On the north side of the square stands the bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I de' Medici by Giambologna. Walking through the square at dusk, you can often encounter street performers playing music, with the sounds echoing among the ancient buildings. From the time of the Republic of Florence to the present, this square has been a gathering place for citizens and tourists alike, where centuries of power shifts and artistic heritage intertwine.Florence · 26.6km from Vinci

Used to represent the Jewish hero King David in the Bible, it attracts about 1.2 million people every year to visit. In the beginning, the statue was placed in the square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1873, to protect the statue, the statue of David was transferred to the gallery of the Academy Art Gallery. Later, the Florence government also successively exhibited two replicas, which were placed in the center of Piazzale Michelangelo and in front of the gate of the City Hall.Florence · 26.9km from Vinci

327 reviews
The Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence is located in Piazza Santa Croce. As a renowned Franciscan church, its unique architectural style profoundly influenced the design of later European churches and is known as the "Pantheon of Italy." It serves as the final resting place for 276 notable Italian figures, including Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Marconi, and also houses Dante's cenotaph. The church houses precious works by many great masters, embodying the essence of Gothic and Renaissance art. The French writer Stendhal once described it: "Slowly, the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence came into view. My heart grew restless... My whole body seemed to lose strength, and with every step, I felt as if I might collapse." The famous "Stendhal syndrome" originated from this experience. The church was first built in 1294, designed by Florence architect Arnolfo di Cambio. The current neo-Gothic facade, seen today, was added in the 19th century to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Dante's birth, featuring a statue of Dante at its center. The facade is decorated with marble inlays of varying colors, creating a rich and vivid visual effect. At the top of the main entrance is a Star of David ornament designed by Jewish architect Nicolò Matas.Florence · 27.2km from Vinci

such a lovely place, the duomo or cathedral is very big that I cannot take a picture of the whole cathedral. Even if I have seen it several times I always love to visit and see it again and again.

The queue was quite long, and you need to make sure you're in the correct line before you start queuing… Queues at tourist attractions in Europe often consist of several separate lines with unclear signage. I didn't choose to climb the bell tower or the dome, but the museum included in the ticket is worth a good look; personally, I felt the environment was quite nice.

It's worth a visit. Although I don't know much about Florence, I just wanted to check it off my list and get a feel for it. I recommend splitting your time between visiting the Pitt Palace and the Uffizi Gallery. You can go to the Pitt Palace around 8 am and spend most of the day exploring it at your own pace. Because of time constraints, we didn't get to see much of the Boboli Gardens. Our accommodation near the train station was quite convenient. This was my second time in Florence, and I'd probably come back for a third time if I had the chance.

The towers of the Old Palace are well worth climbing; they offer panoramic views of the city and the Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore). However, climbing the cathedral itself would obscure the view of the Old Palace itself. The interior of the Old Palace is also magnificent, with many rooms open to the public. However, the rooms are mostly furnished with frescoes and few other pieces of furniture or decoration.

The cultural center of Europe, the birthplace of the European Renaissance, the birthplace of opera, and a world-famous cultural tourist destination. Built in 1345, the Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge in Florence. The Ponte Vecchio was formerly the corridor from the Uffizi Palace to the Pitti Palace across the river.

The Arno River is the largest and most famous river in central Italy. It originates from the Apennine Mountains and passes through the famous Florence and Pisa. The river has often flooded these two cities in history, the most recent time being in 1966.

Love is the seed of virtue. If you love, please love cleanly. The money under the moon has never given the toiling human beings a moment of peace. Go your own way and let others talk. Tribute to Dante🌹 This statue of Dante stands majestically in front of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence.

The Boboli Gardens are very wild. Although they are also regular European-style gardens with shaded trees, flower beds and fountains, some places also have the charm of winding paths, where you can spend an entire afternoon. There is a small museum at the highest point of the garden, which houses some tableware and other items used by the family in the past.
