Sveti stefan
No. 3 of Best Things to Do in Montenegro

Sveti stefan

7.1
Sveti stefan is located on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro and is a small fortified island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. In the 15th century, the local Paštrovići tribe built a defensive settlement consisting of 12 stone houses on the island using captured spoils to resist Ottoman attacks, which subsequently developed into a fishing village with a population of approx. 400. In the mid-20th century, the island's residents gradually moved out, and the entire village was transformed into a resort, attracting celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren. The entire island retains its traditional Mediterranean architectural style, with red-tiled stone houses layered along the hillside and winding stone alleys. There are 3 churches on the island, among which the Church of St. Stephen, built in the 12th century, is particularly striking and sits on the high point of the island. The beaches on both sides of the causeway between the island and the mainland have a unique pink hue due to the presence of coral fragments. Villa Miločer on the mainland side was built in 1936 as the summer residence of Queen Marija of Yugoslavia and is surrounded by extensive olive groves.Sveti Stefan · 15.8km from Virpazar

Budva Old Town

7.6
4.6/5
31 reviews
Budva Old Town has a continuous history of habitation spanning over 2,500 years, making it one of the oldest settlements along the Adriatic coast. From early Illyrian settlements and ancient Greek trading posts to the successive rule of Rome, Byzantium, and the Republic of Venice, the remnants of different civilizations are layered throughout the old town. The entire old town is surrounded by defensive stone walls, with beaches just outside, allowing sea breezes to drift into the stone alleys. The old town is compact, with narrow, cobblestone streets winding through it. Small squares occasionally open up from the alleys, with cafes and restaurants lined up under the arcades. The square enclosed by three churches is the heart of the old town: the bell tower of the Church of St. John is one of the tallest structures in the old town and can be seen from afar; the adjacent Church of St. Mary, built in the 9th century, is one of the oldest surviving churches on the eastern Adriatic coast; the Church of the Holy Trinity is distinguished by its pink and gray striped stone exterior walls. Walking to the citadel at the southern tip of the peninsula, you can climb the wall walkway to overlook St. Nicholas Island and the bays on both sides.Budva · 21.2km from Virpazar

Located in Golubovci Urban Municipality in Montenegro, Lake Skadar National Park is a shining pearl on the Balkan Peninsula. It is centered on Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, and is a vast area with beautiful natural scenery. Kotor Old Town Viewhas been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The entire old town is surrounded by walls approximately 4.5 km long. The stone walls rise from the seaside, zigzagging up the steep mountain to reach the Castle of San Giovanni at an altitude of about 280 m, forming a complete defensive system. The walls were first built in the 9th century and have been continuously expanded over the following ten centuries, with some sections reaching up to 20 m in height. The old town is accessed through three gates, including the Sea Gate. Upon entering, the first thing that catches the eye is the Place d'Armes, where a clock tower built in 1602 stands, slightly tilted due to multiple earthquakes. Walking deeper along the cobblestone alleys, you will pass the Flour Square, the Karampana Fountain, and several palaces of noble families. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is the core landmark of the old town, with its solemn and striking Romanesque twin-bell tower facade. The Maritime Museum next to the cathedral tells the history of navigation in the bay from the 9th century to World War II. About halfway up the climb along the walls, there is also the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, which serves as a viewpoint for a mid-climb rest. From the top of the Castle of San Giovanni, you can overlook the red roofs of the entire old town and the panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor.Kotor · 33.4km from Virpazar

Millennium Bridge

4.0/5

Millennium Bridge spans the Morača River in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, and is a single-pylon cable-stayed bridge. The bridge is approx. 170 m long, with a pylon over 50 m high standing on one bank. More than a dozen cable stays fan out from the top of the pylon, suspending the wide bridge deck in the air, while on the other side, over twenty cables are anchored in a counterweight. From a distance, it looks like a taut harp or a billowing sail, gracefully connecting the city center with the new town on the other side of the river. There are pedestrian walkways on both sides of the bridge, and walking across is a great way to experience it: on one side is the cityscape of the city center, and on the other is the water of the Morača River and the skyline of the new town. It is especially worth staying from evening to night, when the illuminated pylon and cables cast reflections on the river, creating distinct silhouettes that are a favorite for photography enthusiasts.Podgorica · 26.8km from Virpazar

Perast, Montenegro is an old town on the shores of the Bay of Kotor, situated on a headland separating the Bay of Risan and the Bay of Kotor. It is located northwest of the old town of Kotor, backed by St. Elijah Hill, and faces the narrow Verige Strait within the bay. The town has a permanent population of only a few hundred people, and it takes only about twenty minutes to walk from one end to the other, yet it perfectly preserves a collection of Baroque palaces left behind by seafaring families from the Venetian era. Nearly twenty churches still remain today, their waterfront facades lined up in a row, forming an iconic stretch of the Bay of Kotor's skyline.Perast · 42.3km from Virpazar

Budva Old Town is a charming coastal gem that beautifully combines history, culture, and stunning Adriatic scenery. Surrounded by ancient stone walls, the old town is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, historic churches, cozy cafés, and picturesque squares. Walking through its medieval alleys feels like stepping back in time, while the nearby beaches and waterfront add a vibrant atmosphere. I loved exploring the hidden corners, enjoying the sea views, and experiencing the unique blend of old-world charm and modern energy. Whether you're interested in history, photography, or simply relaxing by the coast, Budva Old Town is well worth a visit.

2019.08.Podgorica - Millennium Bridge, street view: Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, is definitely the most ordinary capital I have ever seen. There are only a few high-rise buildings in the whole city, and there are many dirt roads out of the city. There is nothing to see or do, and no matter how you take photos, they don’t look good. It is also difficult for photographers to capture beautiful scenery!

The Bay of Kotor, which ranks first on the list of places to spend the summer in Biella, is the shining pearl of the Adriatic Sea! A beautiful bay that you can encounter for free, with a score of 4.7 and 38 reviews, is definitely popular~ The mountains on both sides of the bay are lush, and the towns on the shore are scattered. The sea water is clear and blue. Take a boat cruise or walk along the coast, feel the sea breeze, and see the snow-capped mountains and the blue sea in the distance blend together. The scenery is so beautiful that it is breathtaking. The romance and grandeur of Montenegro are fully displayed here. It is a bay feast that you must check in when you come to Montenegro~
