The Old Town of Heidelberg is located on the main street parallel to the Neckar River. On a sunny August morning two years ago, after having a Michelin-starred breakfast at the Hirschgasse Hotel at the starting point of the Philosopher&#39;s Path, I strolled along the Neckar River before seven o&#39;clock and reached the Old Bridge in less than ten minutes. It was still too busy. Later, I turned into the alley and unexpectedly saw the Jesuit Church right in front of me. On the way back from the library, I walked along the riverside path, which was quite artistic. The beautiful scenery on both sides of the river was in sight. It seemed that it would be better to avoid the too busy streets.

Goethe&#39;s statue and chair in the English garden of Heidelberg Castle In the summer of 1814, Goethe was already 65 years old. He met his old friend, the banker Willemer, at his home in Frankfurt, the adopted daughter of his old friend, Marianne von Willemer. The 30-year-old dancer had long admired the poet. During the conversation, Goethe was also impressed by Marianne&#39;s artistic talent, and the two of them sparked a love affair. Nine days later, Marianne married Willemer and became the banker&#39;s wife. Goethe&#39;s love affair with Marianne did not end, and the two expressed their feelings through poetry. In the late summer and early autumn of 1815, Goethe came to Heidelberg. This was Goethe&#39;s seventh visit to this beautiful city, and Marianne was living in Heidelberg at the time. Goethe stayed in Heidelberg for two weeks this time and had a secret tryst with Marianne. During these sweet days, the two of them either in the garden outside the Heidelberg Castle or at home, confessing their love and longing for each other. Goethe recited his poems to Marianne and gave her ginkgo leaves. Goethe&#39;s passionate feelings for Marianne were turned into poems, which were collected in the &quot;East-West Poetry Collection&quot; published four years later. The secret love between Goethe and Marianne was not discovered until they died separately. 
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;100 years later, in order to commemorate the love between Goethe and Marianne, the Heidelberg City Government placed a stone chair on one side of the Heidelberg Castle Garden where they once had a tryst. It was called the Goethe Chair, and the back of the chair was carved with a pattern of a hoopoe, a symbol of love.
