Hualien is famous for whale watching because the seabed terrain off the coast of Hualien and Taitung drops sharply, and there are relatively deep seas. The Kuroshio current passes through the eastern waters of Taiwan, and there are abundant fish in the Kuroshio, which also attracts many whales and dolphins to appear for food. The Hualien-Taitung waters are the place where the most whales and dolphins are found in Taiwan. The most common ones are sperm whales, false killer whales, patterned dolphins, and spinner dolphins. From April to October every year, it is the courtship period for dolphins. During this period, they will jump out of the sea in large numbers to perform to find a good mate.
