Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Bali, Indonesia
Garden Wisnu Kencana is one of Bali's most famous landmarks. It is located in the south of Bali, covers an area of 60 hectares and was completed in August 2018. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and his mount Garuda, the sacred eagle, which is his companion. Vishnu, the protector of the world, is one of the three main gods of Hinduism along with Brahma and Shiva.
Garuda Wisnu Kencana aims to be the tallest statue in Indonesia, and its design is inspired by a story in Hindu mythology about the search for nectar (elixir of life). Legend has it that the eagle agreed to be ridden by Vishnu in exchange for the right to use the elixir of life to free his enslaved mother.
The statue is 75 meters high and 65 meters wide. It sits on a pedestal, bringing the total height of the monument to 121 meters, nearly 30 meters taller than the Statue of Liberty in the United States. The completed monument is about as tall as a 21-story building. Weighing 4,000 tons, it is the heaviest statue in the country.
The statue is made of copper and brass plates with a stainless steel frame and skeleton, and reinforced concrete core columns. The area of the exterior covering is 22,000 square meters. Vishnu's crown is covered with golden mosaics, and the statue has a special lighting installation. The monument was completed on July 31, 2018, and was unveiled by Indonesian President Joko Widodo on September 22, 2018.
