The Spiritual and Cultural Value of the Potala Palace The Potala Palace is located on Marpori Mountain in Lhasa. The mountain is called Red Mountain because of the red color of its rock and soil. The Potala Palace covers an area of 400,000 square meters, with a building area of 130,000 square meters. Standing 115 meters tall, it boasts 13 floors, over 2,000 rooms, and 34 large Buddhist halls. It consists of four main areas: the Snow City, the White Palace, the Red Palace, and Dragon King Pond Park (the Palace's back garden. Tsangyang Gyatso once described it as follows: "The willows have not been cut down, nor the thrushes startled away. The exquisite Zongjiao Lukang certainly has the right to behold the excitement.") The Potala Palace is not a cold building; it is a living epic, a miracle woven through the interplay of material, spiritual, and cultural forces across time and space. We should understand and appreciate the Potala Palace through a philosophical perspective that combines "looking up to the stars" with "keeping our feet on the ground," and a cognitive pursuit that sees the essence through phenomena. I will attempt to use this as a mirror to comment on the Potala Palace from my perspective, hoping to deepen your understanding of it. 1. The Ultimate "Gazing at the Stars": A Spiritual Beacon and Monument of Faith From the perspective of "gazing at the stars," the Potala Palace is the physical embodiment of humanity's ultimate pursuit of lofty ideals and the spiritual world. It transcends architecture itself: it is not a place for "residence," but a place for "pilgrimage." For Tibetan Buddhists, it serves as a model of the center of the universe and a symbol of the mortal realm of Avalokitesvara. This sacredness has, from the outset, transcended the mundane concept of a palace, transforming it into a monument embodying the devout faith of countless people. It is the ultimate embodiment of "seeing a mountain is still a mountain": for believers, the Potala Palace is "the mountain," an intuitive and unquestionable abode of faith. This reverence and worship stems not from blind obedience but from a pure and unwavering spiritual return achieved through generations of cultural inheritance and inner enlightenment. Standing there, it embodies a powerful spiritual energy field, soothing the soul and guiding its direction. 2. A Down-to-Earth Miracle: The Crystallization of Wisdom and Ingenuity From a down-to-earth perspective, the Potala Palace's greatness lies in its unparalleled practical foundation. Unparalleled Engineering: Using the technological capabilities of over 1,300 years ago, the construction of this magnificent, sturdy, and fully functional palace complex, built against the mountainside at an altitude of over 3,700 meters, is itself a remarkable achievement in scientific endeavor. It embodies the ancient Tibetan people's profound understanding and masterful application of geography, geology, materials science, and structural mechanics, and stands as an enduring example of dedication. Deep Cultivation of Art and Culture: Every mural, every Buddha statue, and every scripture within the palace is the product of the down-to-earth dedication of countless craftsmen. They dedicated their entire lives to cultivating their own artistic niche, crystallizing religious teachings, historical stories, and cultural essence in exquisitely aesthetic forms, forming a vast and profound cultural treasure trove. This is no mere decoration, but rather the historical memory and cultural bloodline of a nation. 3. "Seeing the Mountain as Not a Mountain": The Complexity and Multifaceted Nature of Historical Layers As the "Three Mountains Theory" describes, our understanding of the Potala Palace must go beyond the surface. It is more than just a religious sanctuary: it was once the political center of Tibet's theocratic integration and the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas. This means it has witnessed the transition of power, historical disputes, and the fusion and collision of cultures. Within its walls, echoes not only the sound of chanting but also the tumult of history and the political maneuvering. Understanding this, we can understand why it is so unique and irreplaceable—it is the ultimate symbol of the union of divine and royal authority. It is a living cultural museum: Today, we revere and venerate not only its religious significance but also the shared wisdom, tenacity, and artistic achievement of humanity represented by its status as a World Cultural Heritage. We are beginning to see the mountain as more than just a mountain, recognizing its multifaceted role as a witness to history and a bearer of culture, and appreciating its universal value as a complex of architecture, art, and history. Overall: The Potala Palace's revered status stems from its successful integration of the divine brilliance of "looking up to the stars" with the down-to-earth wisdom of "keeping one's feet on the ground." It represents both a lofty aspiration to the afterlife and a solid grounding in the spirit of craftsmanship in this world. It reminds us that the greatest achievements all begin with lofty ideals (looking up to the stars) and culminate in ultimate practice (keeping one's feet on the ground). Thousands of years later, people at all stages of their cognitive development can see its beauty and power in a way that suits their own understanding. I hope that these perspectives will enrich your image of the Potala Palace.
The experience was great. We were a group of three and gathered at 8:50. We walked in straight away without waiting in line. Director Chen patiently explained along the way and had good time control. We didn't feel tired at all. The overall experience was very good.

Maybe I've seen it so many times that I'm no longer impressed. It was very cold at night, so I definitely brought a coat. I felt the highlight of the entire show was the herd of cattle, sheep, and horses running. The plot felt very bland. I felt I'd regret not going, but I also felt a little regretful if I did.
It sounds like a fantastic show! The scale of the performance, with thousands of people, must have been incredible. You're truly lucky to have been able to see such a wonderful show. The Princess Wencheng show is definitely worth seeing. Highly recommended.

Barkhor Street is located in Lhasa's Chengguan District. Admission is free all day and it's an absolutely stunning place! Must-see spots when visiting Barkhor Street: 1. Barkhor Street is a gathering place for pilgrims, and every corner is a breathtaking spectacle. 2. Barkhor Street has many shops that rent Tibetan clothing for photo shoots. You can choose according to your preferred style. Prices generally range from 299 to 399 RMB. I wore my own Tibetan clothing, which looked stunning. A little girl, about four or five years old, ran up to me and said, "Sister, you're so beautiful!" I was so happy! 3. The Atiao milk tea at the entrance of the Jokhang Temple is a must-try; it's delicious! 4. Be sure to circumambulate the prayer hall three times clockwise on Barkhor Street to pray. 5. The red graffiti walls on Barkhor Street are photogenic and have a very Tibetan feel.
On my second day in Lhasa, I walked straight to Barkhor Street and Jokhang Temple. Although I'd been to Tibetan areas before, this street was decidedly more charming. I strolled through the streets and bought some small finds. Reservations are required for Jokhang Temple, but you can buy a ticket to enter Ramoche Temple directly. Tibetan architecture and Tibetan Buddhism complement each other beautifully here, especially the Tibetans' prostrating themselves every three steps. I watched quietly, not understanding but respecting them. People of faith shouldn't be mocked.

[Scenery] The Potala Palace Square has a great environment, the national flag is majestic, and it faces the Potala Palace. You can take photos of its reflection at night. Yaowang Mountain is next to it. [Fun] You need to go through security check, but it is open during get off work hours, so it is absolutely safe. [Value for money] Free
It is the best place to take photos of the entire magnificent Potala Palace besides Yaowang Mountain. If you are lucky enough to come here after the rain, you will have the opportunity to take photos of the rare reflection of the Potala Palace.

Nanshan Park is located in Chengguan District, Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region. It is located directly south of the majestic Potala Palace. A green mountain separates it from the Lhasa River and Liuwu Bridge. After climbing to the top, you can see the entire city center with the Potala Palace as the center. There are also four big characters "Long Live the Motherland" on the back mountain, which will be lit up at night.
Come to Lhasa, not only the Potala Palace, but also the Nanshan Park is worth punching in. In Nanshan Park, you can have a panoramic view of the majestic Potala Palace and walk on the green mountain trail. Standing on the observation deck of Nanshan Park, the scenery of the entire city of Lhasa is unobstructed, the Potala Palace in the distance is solemn, and the red walls and white tiles shine a sacred light under the sun. Along the winding path, there is a unique vegetation on the plateau, and the breathing is full of freshness and freedom. I heard that when night fell, the lights were on, the city and the starry sky were shining, and I could have a beautiful visual feast. Unfortunately, I rushed to the itinerary and couldn't linger at night. The city of daylight is well-known, the sunshine on the plateau, the grass and trees are in the distance with the snowy mountains, bringing you a unique oxygen inhalation holy place experience, feeling the gentleness and magnificent beauty of Lhasa. Climb along the mountaineering trail in Nanshan Park to see the green plants swaying in the highland wind. On the top of the mountain, the Potala Palace is unreservedly displayed in front of you. The weight of history and the spirit of nature are perfectly intertwined at this moment. Here, every step is the scenery, every eye is shocking.

Behind the Potala Palace is a very beautiful park called Zongjiaolukhang Park. It is an open urban park in Lhasa that integrates natural landscape and cultural history. It is an important place for tourists and citizens to relax, take photos, and experience Tibetan culture. There is an artificial lake in the park called "Longwangtan". Wild ducks and bar-headed geese often inhabit the lake. The reflection of the Potala Palace is a popular photography location.
Zongjiao Fukang Park, located at the foot of the Potala Palace in the center of Lhasa, is an ideal place for Lhasa citizens and tourists to relax. This park combines natural beauty with cultural heritage, with ancient willow trees, tranquil lakes and rich wildlife. The park is divided into four seasons, the autumn is golden and the winter is a paradise for migratory birds. It not only provides a beautiful environment, but also has a number of cultural activities, which is a great place to experience Tibetan culture and enjoy the beauty of nature.

The Lhasa River, called Jiqu in Tibetan, means "Happy River" or "River of Happiness". It originates from Lob Rula on the north side of the middle section of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, flows through Mezhugongka County and Dagze District, and finally passes through Lhasa City, and merges into the Yarlung Zangbo River in Qushui County of Lhasa City. The sunset that day was beautiful.
We drove from Lhasa Airport to the city, and drove along the Lhasa River. In early spring, the green plants along the Lhasa River had not yet sprouted and turned green, and the riverbed was dry and yellow everywhere. Under the dark clouds, I felt even more depressed.

Jokhang Temple has a history of more than 1,300 years and holds a supreme position in Tibetan Buddhism. Jokhang Temple is the most splendid Tubo-era building in Tibet. It is also the earliest civil engineering structure in Tibet and pioneered the Tibetan flat-style temple market layout. The circle around the Sakyamuni Buddha Hall in the center of Jokhang Temple is called "Nangkor", the circle around the outer wall of Jokhang Temple is called "Bakor", and the street radiating from Jokhang Temple is called "Bakor Street" or Bajiao Street. The large circle with Jokhang Temple as the center and including the Potala Palace, Yaowang Mountain and Ramoche Temple is called "Lingkor". These three rings from the inside to the outside are the routes for Tibetans to perform the circumambulation ceremony.
When you arrive in Lhasa, you must check in at this holy place. The scenery is stunning and charming, and there are many interesting places. There is a lot of historical sense in places such as the Tibetan Office, and the cost performance is very high. Faith is everywhere.

Tianhai Night Market is a snack mecca in Lhasa. I am still savoring the taste of roasted lamb’s trotters and roasted tendons. The cumin is particularly strong and the roasting time is just right. I went there to eat roasted lamb’s trotters every night during the few days I was in Lhasa!
Ask the locals in Lhasa where to go for fun at night, and the answer you get is to visit the Barkhor Street Night Market or eat barbecue in Tianhai Mall. There are many barbecue restaurants in the night market, most of which serve beef and mutton skewers with strong flavors. Some restaurants only serve drinks, and you can't drink alcohol!
