Baidi City and Qutang Gorge Scenic Area (5A) (Figure 1).
Baidi City is located on Baidi Mountain on the north bank of the Yangtze River in Fengjie County, adjacent to Kuimen, the gateway to Qutang Gorge. Originally connected to the mainland, Baidi Mountain became an island after the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, due to rising water levels (Figure 2). Baidi City primarily reflects the culture of the Three Kingdoms period.
Entering the scenic area, you'll cross a 338-meter-long wind and rain covered bridge. This bridge, modeled after Han Dynasty architecture, is the only access point from the Baidi City scenic area to the mainland (Figure 3).
After crossing the bridge, you'll see Zhongyi Square, where a bronze statue of Zhuge Liang stands. Behind the statue is the "Chu Shi Biao" (The Memorial to the Emperor on Leaving the Capital), carved from fine white marble (Figure 4).
Then, you'll climb over 360 steps to the Baidi Temple (Figure 5), the highest point of Baidi City. Inside, you'll find Mingliang Hall (Figure 6), Tuogu Hall (Figure 7), Wuhou Shrine, and the Stargazing Pavilion, among other Ming and Qing dynasty buildings. The temple also displays numerous inscriptions of poetry and cultural relics from the Sui and Tang dynasties. Poets throughout history, including Li Bai, Du Fu, and Su Shi, visited Baidi City and left behind numerous poems, earning it the nickname "Poetry City." The most famous of these is Li Bai's "Early Departure from Baidi City."
There's an observation deck behind the mountain, offering a stunning view of the "Mighty Kuimen Gate," a must-see. The view is featured on the back of the 10-yuan RMB (see Figure 8). The peak in the distance is the "Top of the Three Gorges," the physical summit of the Three Gorges at an altitude of 1,388 meters.
At 10:30 AM, board a cruise ship from Zhongyi Wharf to explore the Qutang Gorge. Sit on the third deck, enjoying the gentle river breeze and listening to the guide's eloquent introductions, while admiring the beautiful scenery along both sides of the gorge. Along the cliffs along the coast, there are numerous cliff carvings by famous figures (see Figure 9). It's said the original carvings have been submerged, and the ones we see today are replicas.
The boat returns to the pier after 50 minutes of sailing, and the tour ends.
