The history of Haghpat Monastery is slightly shorter than that of Sanahin, but Haghpat came from behind, and a few hundred years later, Haghpat's status is definitely above Sanahin. The scale here is bigger and Byzantine. And some murals are also preserved. On the mountains near Alaverdi, you can see the Sanahin Monastery across the valley.
The Haghpat Monastery complex is located in Alaverdi area, 3 kilometers away from Sanahin area. It was organized by Queen Hoslovnosch and her two sons, Gurigel and Subat, between 967 and 991. This Byzantine Christian church is located in the center of the northern Armenian monastery. At the beginning of the 13th century, Caucasus wooden temples were built around it one after another. This ingenious combination of two different types of monasteries is the most outstanding artistic example of Armenian religious art between the 10th and 13th centuries.
