The ancient city of Chiang Saen is located to the north of Chiang Rai, which is a relatively border place. There are still historical relics such as the old city wall.
The whole ancient city is very quiet. It is said that there used to be 76 temples here, but in fact, except for a relatively complete building, the rest are basically ruins. The complete temple is called Wat Chedilung. From its name, it may have some origins with the Chedi Luang Temple in Chiang Mai. The towering stupa tells of its past glory. Although the top of the tower was damaged by the 2007 earthquake, it does not hinder its 800-year glory.
Some elements of the ancient city can be found in the ruins of the current residential area. Unfortunately, the ancient city of Chiang Saen has almost become the so-called Golden Triangle. This city itself is the oldest Thai city in Thailand and the original capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The city walls are older and more primitive than those in Chiang Mai.
Chiang Saen or also been known as a ghost town because still can’t be described as ‘booming’ to this day. As you explore the area, you’ll see ruins of the old ramparts and other glimpses of a bygone era.Sometimes it feel a little bit scary. But still u can enjoy the other things.
Chiang Saen is located about five hours from Chiang Mai. The town offers a glimpse into the history of northern Thailand.
