"Botanical Building and Lily Pond One of the most famous attractions in Balboa Park is the tropical plant greenhouse and lotus pond (Botanical Building and Lily Pond). This quaint and historic botanical garden greenhouse is one of the four permanent buildings of the 1915 Panama-California Fair. The greenhouse is a slat structure, 2,500 feet long, 75 feet wide and 60 feet high. It is still one of the largest slat structures in the world. Greenhouses are housed with more than 2100 permanent plants and seasonal displays of colors including cycads, ferns, orchids, pineapples, palms and seasonal displays of flowers. Greenhouses are lush and leafy, and blooming orchids are a garnish of greenery. The sunlight shone through the woods into the greenhouse, the woods' shadows and the mottled trees' shadows against each other, a bit mysterious and wonderful. "This is a nice stop along the highway in Joshua Tree. There is parking and a short trail that winds through the cholla - there is even a small first aid kit attached to the fence post at the parking lot in case you get too close to the cholla. It is not a huge wow site but more subtle especially if you are here when the light is right. The cholla are fascinating and it is a real forest of them - more than I have seen together elsewhere. If you are interested there are Ocotillas a short distance further down the road."
