Observing eagles soaring over the Illinois River or perched on trees above the unfrozen waters through a telescope is truly a special experience. Despite the cold, witnessing the grandeur of nature is a remarkable delight. Additionally, late winter or early spring (March to April) is the best time to enjoy the waterfalls. During the dry seasons of fall or summer, the waterfalls may dry up or trickle, but as the snow melts and rainfall increases, they cascade with powerful streams. Particularly, seeing the torrents of water in usually dry canyons like Owl Canyon or Cascade Canyon is a breathtaking sight. However, trails can be extremely slippery and dangerous due to ice or mud during winter and spring, so it is essential to bring safety gear such as crampons or trekking poles. Starved Rock, showcasing different faces throughout the four seasons, is so diverse and captivating that nature lovers will find it worth visiting multiple times a year.

Starved Rock State Park, often referred to as the jewel of Illinois, is a must-visit destination for fall hiking. I visited in mid-October when the autumn foliage was at its peak, and the entire park was bathed in golden and crimson hues, offering breathtaking views. Although finding parking was challenging due to its popularity, the experience was well worth it. We started with the relatively short French Canyon trail, moved on to the famous Wildcat Canyon, and finally completed the trail leading to the summit of Starved Rock. The park is characterized by its deep sandstone canyons and waterfalls that appear frozen in time (though many are dry during the off-season). From the Wildcat Canyon overlook, we enjoyed a picturesque view of the Illinois River blending with the vast forest. The trails mainly consist of wooden stairs and dirt paths, with some sections being slippery due to moisture, so wearing sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes is essential. Walking along the paths beneath the waterfalls and canyons felt like stepping into another world, evoking a sense of wonder. The cool autumn weather, dazzling foliage, and unique terrain made my experience at Starved Rock unforgettable, and it became clear why this place is considered one of the Midwest's top natural attractions.

Since we visited with our young children, we opted for the Starved Rock Boat Tour, which provides a scenic view of the park's major landmarks from the water. The guide made the experience educational and entertaining by sharing geological and historical insights about the canyons and cliffs. The sandstone cliffs viewed from the boat were majestic in a way that was different from seeing them up close while hiking. The towering cliffs and their sheer faces were impressive, and the autumn foliage along the riverbank was a feast for the eyes. The cruise is highly recommended for those who find hiking challenging or want to experience the park's charm from a new perspective. Additionally, the Starved Rock Lodge near the park entrance is a beautiful log structure, perfect for dining or purchasing souvenirs before or after hiking. The main overlook near the lodge offers a panoramic view of the Illinois River and the dam. Bringing a picnic blanket and snacks to enjoy on the park's lawns or by the riverbank is also a great idea.

Cascade Canyon, in particular, features a path leading into the deep space beneath the waterfall, making it a perfect photo spot for capturing unique memories. However, the canyon floors can be slippery due to moisture and mud, so caution is advised. For travelers fascinated by geology or the forces of nature, exploring the depths of Starved Rock's canyons is a must to truly appreciate the wonders shaped by nature.
