Hong Kong Palace Museum

The Hong Kong Palace Museum showcases precious collections from the Palace Museum and selected artifacts from other world-renowned institutions through innovative curatorial approaches. Opened in 2022, the museum is a leading institution for the study and appreciation of Chinese arts and culture, as well as for fostering dialogue among world civilizations. It was established through a collaboration between the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Palace Museum. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust donated HKD 3.5 billion for the museum's establishment and funded part of its annual exhibitions and educational programs from 2023 to 2032.

Through research, exhibitions, publications, and educational and professional exchange programs, the museum builds international partnerships and establishes Hong Kong as a global hub for arts and culture. As a valuable resource for the local community, the museum inspires community engagement, fosters dialogue, and promotes creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Gallery 9: "Hong Kong Jockey Club presents: Window to heaven - religious art collection from the Tretyakov Gallery" (scheduled to open on October 21, 2026)

This exhibition showcases the profound cultural and artistic traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy. It will feature approximately 100 precious collections from the world-renowned Tretyakov Gallery in Russia, including significant icon paintings with a history of nearly a thousand years, as well as Orthodox Christian artworks adorned with gemstones. The exhibition will be divided into five thematic sections, delving into the sacred role of icon paintings in religious liturgy and highlighting the importance of Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, and evangelists in the Orthodox artistic tradition.

Hall 8:"Brilliance: Jewelry masterpieces from the Metropolitan Museum of Art" special exhibition

This is the first large-scale global jewelry exhibition held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Hong Kong, featuring jewelry art from five continents spanning nearly 4,000 years from 2000 BCE to the 21st century. This exhibition marks the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first foray into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The exhibition will showcase approximately 200 treasures from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, along with selected works from the Hong Kong Museum of Jewelry, exploring the intimate connection between the human body and jewelry. These masterpieces will demonstrate the encyclopedic depth and breadth of this world-renowned museum's collection, while illustrating the diversity and interconnectedness of global jewelry.

Gallery 1: The Forbidden City and the world - Cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and foreign countries

The exhibition places the Forbidden City and Chinese history within a global perspective, showcasing the diverse exchanges in diplomacy, trade, science, thought, and craftsmanship during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, weaving a grand tapestry of mutual cultural learning between China and the world. Featuring primarily artifacts from the Palace Museum collection, including over 150 cultural relics from China, other parts of Asia, and even Europe, the exhibition not only highlights the profound heritage of Chinese art and culture but also demonstrates the inclusive cultural essence of the Forbidden City and the significant contributions of Chinese civilization to the world. This exhibition is jointly presented by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Palace Museum, embodying the Hong Kong Palace Museum's mission to promote the inheritance and innovation of China's outstanding traditional culture and to foster dialogue between Chinese and foreign civilizations.

The Forbidden City was the primary residence of emperors and their consorts during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This exhibition primarily showcases over 300 exquisite 18th-century artifacts from the Palace Museum collection, allowing visitors to glimpse daily life from dawn to dusk within the Forbidden City and explore the rich material and spiritual world of its inhabitants.

The Palace Museum's collection of Chinese ceramics from various dynasties primarily inherits the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties, renowned for their vast quantity, exquisite quality, and remarkable diversity. This exhibition showcases a selection of representative Ming dynasty ceramic treasures from the Palace Museum, highlighting the developmental evolution and outstanding achievements of ceramic craftsmanship during the early, middle, and late Ming periods.

From March 20, 2026 to March 17, 2027

Coinciding with the 2026 Year of the Fire Horse, the "Soaring celestial steed" exhibition adopts a curatorial approach centered on dialogues between court and literati paintings, tradition and modernity, as well as Eastern and Western art, showcasing nearly 100 masterpieces featuring horses by 60 renowned artists from the Yuan Dynasty to modern times.

The exhibition features over 100 exquisite artifacts from the Palace Museum, interpreting the artistic value of Chinese traditional craftsmanship from three perspectives: design, production, and usage. It also collaborates with outstanding designers from Hong Kong to showcase the influence of traditional craftsmanship on contemporary design concepts and cultural life.

Gallery 6: Special exhibition "Delighted by the encounter: Wong Kwun-sham's connoisseurship and art of Chinese painting and calligraphy"

Organized by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, this large-scale exhibition showcases the creative journey of Mr. Wong Kwun-sham, a renowned Hong Kong painter, calligrapher and connoisseur. The exhibits comprise over 60 important works recently donated to the museum by Mr. Wong's wife, Mrs. Wong Pong Chi-ying. The exhibition not only presents Mr. Wong's main artistic styles and achievements, but also outlines the close connection between his research in connoisseurship and his artistic creations. As the museum's fourth exhibition themed on donated collections, it marks the museum's increasingly rich and comprehensive holdings.

"A day in the city" exhibition brings together nine cross-disciplinary local artists, both established and emerging, creating a fascinating dialogue space between the magnificent Forbidden City and the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong. The exhibition bridges Chinese traditional culture and contemporary art, guiding audiences through time and space to explore how ancient wisdom inspires modern daily life, while using experimental artistic approaches to examine how traditional culture can be revitalized in an urban context.
