Interesting
An interesting walk. We learnt about the 1916 (and more recent) flood, its impact and the rebuilding process. Fascinating to hear about the resilience of the community and the amazing engineering work...
If you don't have time to do the circle walk around the island (10 km, 2 hours) then this walk is a good one to do. You learn how people deal here with water and wind.
It would have been very scary when the flood height was at its peak for the residents of Marken in 1916. It is now protected by the dyke from flooding and you can drive to it from Amsterdam easily.
I saw the movie "the storm" that hit the western part of the Netherlands facing the North Sea. It was a devastating event in the lives of people. I can place my self as we walked along the village...
