The old city of Mdina was first built in the 8th century BC and has a history of almost three thousand years. This old city was once the capital city-state of Malta for thousands of years, until Valletta rose, gradually declined and was abandoned. Since it was successively occupied and renovated by Phoenicians, Arabs and Romans, the architectural style here is very exotic. If it weren't for the occasional restaurants and cars, you really have to forget that you have long been far away from the battles of the Middle Ages.
