Construction stopped in 1170 after the king who ordered the temple to be built was assassinated. The king (Naratu) took the throne after assassinating his father and brother, probably to atone for his sins and to impress the public. Dama Yangji is the largest temple in Bagan. It is indeed huge, but not beautiful in my opinion. Big but not special Buddhist temple, not on the main road, special drive in. Frankly, the unknown Buddhist tower on the way in is more worth taking pictures as it is too crowded.
