Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva was given its name because it was believed to have been built over a Roman temple that was dedicated to Minerva Calcidica. Construction of the church lasted from 1280 until 1453. Looks are quite deceiving as you walk up to the building. It is when you open the front doors that your jaw will drop in astonishment of the beauty this church beholds. Original artwork climbs from the floor to the ceiling. Take a brochure at the entrance to learn about the lives that have lived and the artists that have contributed to the splendor of the church.
