Yu Garden is located in central Shanghai’s Huangpu District, on a spot within the boundaries of former Old City. It is the only classic Chinese garden in the downtown area and was once a private garden for Ming Dynasty officials. The garden covers roughly two hectares and contains various rambling pathways, hidden pavilions, and classic flora. It is a good place to escape the bustling modern city outside. Take note of the hundreds of plaques and inscriptions written by well-known individuals, as well as the park’s collection of stone carvings. Yuyuan Bazaar, located nearby, is good to browse for antiques and souvenirs.

Yu Yuan — a Garden Oasis in the Center of Shanghai's Old City
Yu Garden is thought to have been constructed during the Ming Dynasty, about 400 years ago. The park's superb layout, gorgeous environment, and artistic style of garden building have made it one of Shanghai's highlights.
Yu Garden, also known as Yuyuan Garden or Yu Yuan in Chinese, is a classical garden in Shanghai's Huangpu District that is a must-see destination. It was owned by a government officer named Pan Yunduan during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Yu means pleasing and fulfilling in Chinese, and this garden was created especially for Pan's parents to have a peaceful and happy retirement time.
Classic Chinese architecture, magnificent sculptures and carvings, and the bustling Yuyuan bazaar are among the garden's features.
The garden has a one-of-a-kind design. Decorative halls, intricate pavilions, glistening lakes, zigzag bridges, pagodas, archways, and stunning rockeries are all wonderfully blended.
Getting There - Subway station (Yuyuan garden + about 10mins walk) or if you’re not too far, the area is very bike friendly!
Attractions - Beautiful area and yuyuan old street next to it!
Food & Restaurants - None when you’re in the garden area but plenty once you reach yuyuan old street.
A lot of fun and it’s absolutely beautiful!
A city tour to Yu Garden is a must when visiting Shanghai. The vibrance of the old buildings with some of the tallest skyscrapers in Shanghai in its backdrop is a great sight.
Walk around, sit n reflect, eat local cuisine, watch local activities and shop around. You’ll not be disappointed. 🏯⛲️
(Will visit again during evenings to capture some night time photos 😁)
