South Gate - Angkor Thom

The south gate of Greater Angkor City is the main passage for tourists to Greater Angkor City. Zhou Daguan once recorded that "there is a big stone Buddha head five above the gate, facing the west. One is in the middle, decorated with gold. Two sides of the gate, the stone is pictogram." It can be seen that the south gate was very magnificent at that time, symbolizing the prosperity of the Khmer State.

Angok Tongwangcheng has five gates. The best preserved is the south gate. The huge four-faced Buddha statue is above. The smile is calm. It is one of the symbols of Angkor's monuments. The king city is surrounded by the moat. There are two rows of stone statues on both sides of the bridge on the river. The left row is the angel and the right row of Asura. The town guards the king's city.

Everyone who travels to Cambodia is directed at the buildings in the Angkor Tongwang City. The temples in the Wangcheng are very attractive, but in fact, the entrance of the Angkor Tongwang City is also full of stories, which is the most well-preserved city gate.

The biggest feature here is that there is Angkor Wat's largest "turning the milk sea". Stirring the milk sea is one of the famous myths of India, which illustrates the entanglement between Asura and the gods. Also show the greedy side of God. In addition to the south gate, there is also a small "flip the churning sea" at the entrance of the Holy Jian Temple. Ashuro and the angels (Shuro) together to ask for "no dead manna", Huluo (the good people) hug the dragon tail, and Ashuro (the bad people) hug the dragon head, together stirring the milk sea, this dragon is the NAGA (the Nine-headed snake god) in Indian mythology. Vishnu (the highest-ranking god in narrative poetry, the power to maintain the universe) turned into a tortoise, sinking into the sea floor to bear the weight of the stirring. Later, the undying manna appeared, originally the average of Asura and Shiloh, but Asura (bad man) did not drink the small action. The last one of the only people who stole the drink was Luo Xu, who was cut off his head and arms by the sun god and moon god, and the "undead manna" had reached the throat, but the skull was immortalized. Luo Xu hated the sun god and moon gods, and chased the sun and moon endlessly, devouring them from time to time. This is the origin of the eclipse. When I went, the "turning of the milk sea" in the south gate was repairing the face of the gods who lacked the skull, but unfortunately I couldn't take a photo. There are many places in Angkor that have different colors like these gods. Lighter-colored places, most of them are newly added for repair.

The gate of South Gate is 23 meters high and the gate is in a tower-shaped structure. The reason why the gate is built so high is said to facilitate the passage of the war elephants. The tower of the south gate also has four four-faced Buddhas facing east, west, south and north. The Erawan Buddhas smiled peacefully and examined everyone entering the city with a compassionate look. It is said that the face of the Erawan Buddhas at South Gate, like the Bayan Temple, is carved according to the true appearance of Jehovah VII (JayavarmanVII).
