Cathedral Basilica of St.Louis was built in 1907-1914. The cathedral is very solemn and rich both outside and inside. Its exterior is Romanesque architectural style, with granite walls, rose windows, two heavy stone towers, and the patron saint of the church is King Louis IX of France. In 1997 John Paul II made it a basilica. The church is famous for its mosaic decoration. The vaulted dome is held up by Romanesque spire windows. The moment you enter the church, you seem to travel back to the Byzantine era through time and space. The arcades, walls, and domes are covered in brilliant mosaics, covering a total area of 83,000 square feet, completed by twenty artists over the course of seventy-five years. The mosaics of the main altar and a chapel inside were done by Gorham, while the Italian-style mosaics were decorated by Tiffany.
