Callan Park

Callan Park is an old mental hospital, a rundown park playground. Some are overlooked these days, but still have charm and unparalleled beauty. Used by local walkers these days, it has a playground in the bay and on the hill near the water sports center. The old sandstone mental hospital building remains poorly maintained, and old traces of the beautiful unmanned gardens once cared for by prisoners at the old hospital abound. Park your car in the water sports centre, then walk or take a bus from Victoria rd and walk through the Rozelle store. You may want to find a tattered garden in Paris or Madrid’s old town, and overgrowth adds to its charm. Perfect for picnics or for kids to explore on a wide scale, but don’t expect dining facilities or coffee shops.

So close to Sydney's central business district, yet relaxed and out of the ordinary.
