Wuzhen is back, really don’t recommend budget travel—here’s some honest advice
Just got back from wandering around Wuzhen, carrying the dampness of Jiangnan and a belly full of delicious food. Quickly putting together this super practical guide! September isn’t too crowded, the weather is comfortable, friends who want to go can just copy this~
🚗 How to get there? Avoid travel pitfalls
- From out of town: I took the high-speed train from Shanghai to Tongxiang Station🚄, only 40 minutes. After getting off, take the K282 bus directly to Wuzhen West Scenic Area, 1 hour for 10 yuan, or you can take a ride-hailing car for about 30 minutes at around 50 yuan.
- Transportation inside the scenic area: West Scenic Area is large, you can take free shuttle boats🛶 (for example, from Andufang to Wangjinli), or rent a bike🚲 for 20 yuan/hour. Riding on the stone-paved roads at night feels amazing. There is a free shuttle bus between East and West Scenic Areas, running every 15 minutes.
🏮 Must-visit spots! Avoid the crowds
- West Scenic Area: A must-see! Go to Bailian Tower at dusk to watch the sunset🌇, the Grand Canal under the tower is very atmospheric; at night, see the lanterns near Mao Dun’s former residence, red lanterns reflecting on white walls and black tiles make for great photos📸; don’t miss the Mu Xin Art Museum, the architecture is simple yet stylish, and the exhibits inside are worth savoring.
- East Scenic Area: More original and natural! Visit the Baichuang Hall to see ancient carved big beds, very historic; Hongyuan Tai Dyeing Workshop’s indigo printed cloth hangs all over the yard, looks beautiful when the wind blows, and you can try hand-dyeing💙; early morning in East Scenic Area is less crowded, stroll along Dongshi River, watch locals washing vegetables and clothes, very full of life.
- South Scenic Area: Free! Not very commercialized, mostly old local houses, you can buy handmade pickled vegetables and Gusu biscuits as souvenirs🛍️.
🍜 Foodie list! Only locals eat these
- Inside West Scenic Area: Recommend “Republic Era” Wuzhen soy sauce duck noodles🍜, the soy sauce duck🦆 is flavorful but not greasy; “Yuchanghao” Ding Sheng Cake, soft, glutinous, and sweet, 3 yuan each, super cost-effective🍘.
- Outside the scenic area: “Scholar Lamb Noodles” is a must-try! September’s lamb🐑 is tender, the broth is rich, adding lamb blood curd is amazing🐑; “Old Wuzhen Noodle House” eel silk noodles, fresh eel silk paired with thin noodles is very fragrant.
- Snacks: Street-side scallion pancakes🌯 and stinky tofu🍢 are really worth trying, made fresh and eaten on the spot, crispy outside and tender inside.
📝 3 days 2 nights itinerary! Easy and fun
- Day 1: Arrive at West Scenic Area in the afternoon → check into a guesthouse → explore West Scenic Area night view → have a late-night snack
- Day 2: Morning visit East Scenic Area → lunch with lamb noodles → afternoon visit Mu Xin Art Museum → watch open-air movie in West Scenic Area at night🎬
- Day 3: Early morning stroll in South Scenic Area → buy souvenirs → lunch with eel silk noodles → return trip
💡 September tips! Key points
1. September in Wuzhen is cool in the morning and evening, bring a light cardigan👕, short sleeves are just right when the sun is out at noon.
2. West Scenic Area guesthouses are inside the scenic area, a bit pricier but you can enjoy the area late into the night. Recommend rooms by the water, with river views right outside the window🌊.
3. Don’t buy expensive stuff inside West Scenic Area, handmade goods in South Scenic Area are more affordable.
4. Avoid weekends! There are more people on weekends, weekdays are more comfortable for visiting.
The slow pace of Wuzhen really relaxes you, white walls and black tiles, small bridges and flowing water, even your footsteps slow down on the stone roads~ September is perfect to avoid the peak season, hurry and plan your trip!🍂
Wuzhen Ancient Town Tourist Area No. 35, located at No. 18 Shifo South Road, Tongxiang City, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, is divided into four sections in a cross shape by an inland river system, namely "East Gate, South Gate, West Gate and North Gate", with a town area of 79 square kilometers.
The place very nice, a lot hotel and food are awesome, will come next time
Wuzhen is a charming water town in the Jiangnan region, well worth a visit. The East Gate in the early morning is full of poetic beauty. The cobblestone streets, white walls and black tiles, and old women washing clothes by the river create a tranquil ink painting. At this time, there are few tourists, allowing you to experience Wuzhen's purest simplicity and serenity. The West Gate at night offers a different kind of beauty. As dusk falls, lanterns along the river light up, their warm yellow glow reflected in the water. Taking a ride on a traditional rowing boat, listening to the boatwoman's Jiangnan folk songs, feels like stepping into a dream. Wuzhen also offers a rich cultural experience. You can try making blue-dyed fabric at a wood dyeing workshop or immerse yourself in art at the Mu Xin Art Museum. Furthermore, Wuzhen's cuisine is not to be missed. Dingsheng cake is soft, sweet, and sticky; the mutton noodles are so delicious you'll want to lick the bowl clean; and the freshly made water chestnut cake is also a must-try. However, Wuzhen also has some shortcomings. For example, during holidays, the scenic area experiences large crowds, especially at the Xizha entrance around 10 AM, where congestion can occur. Prices for some activities are also relatively high; for instance, chartering a rowing boat in Xizha costs 480 yuan (for up to 8 people). Furthermore, Wuzhen is quite commercialized, with numerous shops lining Xizha, which might disappoint some tourists seeking a more authentic, natural experience. Overall, Wuzhen offers both captivating water town scenery and rich cultural experiences, but it also has some areas for improvement. However, with proper planning and avoiding peak tourist seasons, visitors can still have an unforgettable experience in this Jiangnan water town.
There is a strong Jiangnan atmosphere, and the minor music that drifts out from different areas from time to time deepens this impression. Living in the ancient town, there are many food markets and you can take a boat to experience the life of the water town.
The environment in Xizha Scenic Area is beautiful and comfortable, and the hygiene is good and tidy; there are all kinds of specialty shops and snack bars, unlike other ancient towns, which all sell the same products; the homestay is very clean; all the service staff encountered in the scenic area have a good service attitude. I think the unified management model of Xizha Scenic Area is very good. I have been to many ancient towns. Compared with the management model of ancient towns, I think the management model of Xizha Scenic Area is worth learning from other ancient towns. The benefits of unified management: 1. There is no phenomenon of aboriginal solicitation. 2. The goods sold in various specialty shops are not similar. 3. Clearly marked prices to avoid false customer-cutting. 4. Good service. Every staff member in the scenic area has a very good service attitude and really serves tourists attentively. Thumbs up for them👍! In the past, when we went to other popular ancient town attractions, we wanted to leave quickly as soon as we entered the scenic area: crowded crowds, dirty and messy environment, small shops selling the same products, shouting and soliciting customers... Xizha Scenic Area is worth visiting, and I am very willing to visit this ancient town again. The above are my personal feelings and thoughts, for your reference!
[Scenery] Wuzhen is suitable for visiting from the end of September to October. After avoiding the hot summer, you can feel the sunshine and the peace of the world here. The scenery is very attractive and suitable for taking pictures. Choose to quietly feel the local customs and customs on the cruise ship, just like traveling back to ancient times, and enjoy the unique beauty of the Jiangnan water town with the flowing water. It is suitable for taking the elderly and children here for vacation. The scenic spot charges admission. It is best to bring some food and water with you, stay here for a morning or an afternoon, and feel the beautiful weather. [Fun] There are some stores in Xizha that you can visit. In the ancient buildings, some modern small gifts are sold, which can be brought to relatives and friends.
Wuzhen, a dreamlike Jiangnan water town, tells the romance of a thousand-year-old town. Wuzhen West Street is the essence, with charming scenery, especially the night view, which makes people linger and forget to leave. There are beautiful scenery everywhere. There are always some Internet celebrities, bloggers, and short video up masters who may be for traffic or to show that they are different. They always despise commercialization and use filters and photo editing to cover up the "original" garbage, cigarette butts, plastic, dead branches and rotten leaves. Wuzhen West Street is worth visiting again, and it is worthy of the Venice of the East.
Stepping into the West Gate Scenic Area of Wuzhen, time seems to have stopped quietly, condensing the charm of the thousand-year-old water town in this world. The morning light is slightly revealed, and the light mist is like a veil, gently covering the white walls and black tiles of the waterside residence. The winding river, like a smart ribbon, runs through the ancient town. The black-sailed boats swayed past, cutting through the mirror-like water surface, rippling layers, as if telling the past. Walking along the bluestone road, the stone slabs under your feet have been polished by time to be warm and smooth, and you can feel the weight of history with every step. The shops on the street are dazzling, but they are still simple and elegant, filled with the unique fireworks atmosphere of Jiangnan. As night falls and the lights come on, Xizha presents another charming scene. The red lanterns on the shore are lit up and reflected in the water, with light and shadow interweaving like a dream. Sitting in a teahouse by the river, sipping a cup of fragrant tea, looking at the ancient bridges, flowing water, and people outside the window, your heart is full of tranquility and comfort. Xizha in Wuzhen is a piece of pure land amidst the hustle and bustle of the world. It is a poetic home for the soul, making people reluctant to leave once they come here.
