The Great Mosque of Xi’an is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in China, built in 742 CE during the Tang dynasty—over twelve centuries ago. It stands as living evidence of the historical presence of Muslims in China, particularly merchants who traveled along the Silk Road from the Middle East to East Asia and settled in ancient cities like Xi’an, the former capital of China. The mosque underwent numerous renovations and expansions during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with each era adding its own artistic and architectural influences. Despite its Islamic purpose, the mosque is built entirely in traditional Chinese architectural style—featuring no dome or minaret, but instead sloping roofs, wooden arches, and pagoda-like structures that resemble a Buddhist temple. Hey Everyone, I’m Z and I travel around the world as a muslim solo traveller. This trip I am travelling from Singapore to Mongolia by Land and last week I was in Xi’An. Xi’an is a muslim friendly city and there are lots of halal (清真) options in the city. I highly advise you to stay in the muslim area near the mosque. What I did in Xi’An: 1. Traverse the Xi’an city walk and walk around it (you can rent a bicycle for it too) 2. Catch the beautiful bell and clock tower when the skies are dark! 3. Teracotta Army Museum (must go when you are in Xi’An) 4. Xi’An Great Mosque (very beautiful chinese and arabic architecture, do remember to dress modestly) 5. Xi’An Muslim Street (Lots and Lots of different halal food to try from) Food to try in Xi’an: 1. Biang Biang Mian 2. Rou Jia Mo (Half-cooked beef in a pita bread) 3. Beef or Lamb Skewers! Located in Huajue Lane, Beiyuanmen Hui Street, commonly known as the Great Mosque or East Great Mosque, it is the largest Islamic mosque in Xi'an. Huajue Lane was a settlement area for Hui ancestors, with the name implying enlightenment and realization. Its history dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The Hui people are characterized by being widely dispersed with small concentrated communities. Their residential areas are centered around mosques, and Xi'an has a Muslim architectural complex consisting of seven mosques and thirteen blocks. In the early 7th century, Islam was introduced to China via the Silk Road. Throughout the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, Islam spread widely in China, and mosques built in various dynasties have been preserved almost everywhere. The Huajue Lane Mosque is one of the famous Islamic mosques. However, one does not see the typical sapphire blue domes and towers of Arab mosques here. Instead, traditional Chinese wooden pavilion-style architecture catches the eye, making it stand out with its unique style among Chinese mosques. I never expected Xi’an to be so clean & I have to say this, beautiful.. maybe I’m just biased after hearing about China street conditions.. but was surprised to see how clean the streets & the attractions were.. even the toilets were clean (even though they have more squatting pan than sitting) Lol 🤣 Other than that, i find the Xian people were very nice to us Muslim ladies.. They find it amusing that we can speak a little broken Mandarin. It does help to get around.. Haha! Would i returned back to Xian? Yes, most definitely! #chinatravel #xian
