Puji Temple, also known as Qian Temple, is one of the three major temples in Putuo Mountain and a national key cultural relic protection unit. The following is a detailed introduction about it: Historical evolution • Construction and early development: It was first built in the second year of Zhenming in the Later Liang Dynasty (916), and was originally named "Bukenqu Guanyinyuan". In the third year of Yuanfeng in the Northern Song Dynasty (1080), it was named "Baotuo Guanyin Temple". During the Qingyuan period (1195-1200), it was listed as one of the "Five Mountains and Ten Temples of the Teaching Academy" in Jiangnan. • Changes in the Ming and Qing Dynasties: In the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1387) and the 36th year of Jiajing (1557), it was moved inland due to the invasion of pirates. During the Wanli period, it was moved back to the original site for restoration and expansion, and was awarded the title of "Huguo Yongshou Putuo Temple". After a fire in the 26th year of Wanli (1598), it was rebuilt with the support of Empress Dowager Li. • Development in the Qing Dynasty: In the fourth year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1665), it was plundered by Dutch pirates. Ten years later, it was destroyed by fire by vagrants. Emperor Kangxi ordered to allocate funds for restoration and renamed it "Puji Zen Temple". In the ninth year of Emperor Yongzheng's reign (1731), it was repaired on a large scale. Architectural layout and landscape • Buildings on the central axis: There are statues of Maitreya Bodhisattva, Skanda Bodhisattva and the Four Heavenly Kings in the Heavenly King Hall. Yuantong Hall is the main hall, with a width of seven rooms. It enshrines an 8.8-meter-high seated statue of Vairocana Guanyin, and on both sides are "32-body statues of Guanyin". The Sutra Library and the Dharma Hall belong to the same building. The Dharma Hall downstairs enshrines the "Three Buddhas of the Past, Present and Future", and the Sutra Library upstairs collects Buddhist scriptures. • Buildings on both sides: Xianjue Hall and Quanzhang Hall are built on both sides of Yuantong Hall, and the veranda is the Arhat Hall. On both sides of the Sutra Library are Pumen Hall in the east and Ksitigarbha Hall in the west. There are also Samantabhadra Hall and Manjusri Hall on both sides of the central axis. To the east of the Heavenly King Hall is the bell tower, and to the west is the drum tower. • Other landscapes: To the east of the Haiyin Pool is the Yongshou Bridge, which was built in the 14th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1536). There are 40 lions of various shapes carved on the stone railings of the bridge. Miaozhuangyan Road is dominated by pine and camphor forests, and along the way there are Buddhist landscapes such as cliff carvings, nunnery sheds, and mountain pavilions. Religious activities • Bathing Buddha Festival: Held regularly every year, believers will bathe the Buddha statue with fragrant water to commemorate the birth of the Buddha and pray for good luck. • Guanyin Incense Festival: Held on the 19th day of the second lunar month on the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva, the 19th day of the sixth lunar month on the day of Guanyin Bodhisattva's enlightenment, and the 19th day of the ninth lunar month on the day of Guanyin Bodhisattva's ordination. At that time, Putuo Mountain and surrounding temples will hold grand ceremonies. • Putuo Mountain Nanhai Guanyin Cultural Festival: Through a series of Buddhist cultural activities, promote Guanyin culture and promote Buddhist cultural exchanges.
