Experience the vast universe of Baroque style knowledge at the Royal Library.
After three months in Vienna, the famous National Library of Vienna, which has been undergoing maintenance and organization for half a year, finally opened to the public. The library of the Habsburg dynasty is truly breathtaking. Walking into this royal library built in the 16th century, one is amazed by the gorgeous interior murals and two-story high walnut bookcases. This space, in the form of a museum, cannot lend out its collection of 200,000 books, which cover various subjects such as science, mechanics, medicine, biology, botany, navigation, and military.
At the same time, the oldest handwritten Bible, dating back to the 6th century, is also preserved here.
Several highlights:
1. In the center of an oval space, large globes from different periods are placed in the four corners, depicting the territories under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty on the maps and painted on the globes in a very symbolic way with Greek gods. I was mesmerized by it!
2. Ceiling Murals: In the paintings, the objects held by the characters, animals, and even the accessories they wear all have symbolic meanings, highlighting the influence of the Habsburg dynasty and the importance of pursuing knowledge.
3. A replica of hand-copied Bible: Inside are many hand-copied Bibles that have been listed as important cultural relics by UNESCO. It is also the first time to see up close how people in the past used time and devout hearts to draw beautiful Bibles. The most eye-catching one is a black background with gold stamping.
Beautiful interior at the national library. It is still undergoing renovation but would still highly recommend a visit!
