The White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple
The White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple, located in the Miaoying Temple on the north side of Fuchengmennei Street in Xicheng District, Beijing, is the earliest and largest Tibetan-style Buddhist pagoda in China that still exists today. This white pagoda has witnessed the history of the Yuan Dynasty and carries a rich cultural connotation.
The origin of the White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple can be traced back to the second year of Liaoshouchang (1096 AD), when the temple was established and a pagoda was built to store precious relics, rosary beads, incense clay mini pagodas, and Dharani scriptures. In the eighth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1271 AD), Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan Dynasty, destroyed the old pagoda and decided to build a new large Lama pagoda, which is the current White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple. It took eight years to complete and the relics of Sakyamuni were enshrined in the pagoda.
The architectural style of the White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple is unique and is a representative work of the original form of the Buddhist pagoda, Sutuo Po. The white pagoda is over 50 meters high and the base area is 810 square meters. The base has three layers, the lower layer is square and painted vermilion, with a door in front and a step bridge in front of the door. The middle and upper layers of the base are the Sumeru seat, which is in the shape of a 'leek', with corner pillars at the corners and clear contours. On the upper layer of the Sumeru seat, there are iron lamp niches all around, and on the Sumeru-style base, a huge lotus petal is built and carved out of bricks, coated with white ash, and molded into a huge lotus seat with a strong shape. The body of the pagoda is supported by five rings on the lotus seat.
The body of the White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple is a huge inverted bowl, about nineteen meters in diameter, shaped like a treasure bottle, also known as the 'pagoda belly'. It has a round outline and is surrounded by seven iron hoops. Above the inverted bowl is the pagoda, the base of the pagoda is in the form of a Sumeru seat, and a pagoda body with a larger bottom and a smaller top stands on the seat. The body of the pagoda is a brick-built 'thirteen heavens'; a huge copper treasure cover, also known as a Huagai, is placed on top of the 'thirteen heavens'. There are thirty-six pairs of copper Buddha statues, Buddha words, and wind bells hanging around the Huagai, looking like tassels. Above the Huagai is the top of the pagoda, which is a small copper Lama pagoda.
Inside the small Lama pagoda at the top of the white pagoda, there are many precious cultural relics, such as the 'Tripitaka' that was respectfully installed for the decoration of the white pagoda in the eighteenth year of Qianlong (1753 AD), a wooden Guanyin statue, a patchwork cassock, a five-Buddha crown, a 'Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra' handwritten by Qianlong, and a Tibetan 'Supreme Mantra', etc. There is also a Yuan Dynasty inscription preserved here, which are all important historical materials for studying this pagoda.
