The Old Town of Bern was built on the hills surrounded by the Aare River in the 12th century and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Most cities in Europe have been ravaged by war. Since Switzerland is a permanent neutral country, the capital of Bern has hardly received persecution from the war, and the medieval city scene has been preserved. The River Aare of Aare River surrounds Bern like a green silk, and the old Bern quietly wakes up from his dreams. The beautiful Lower Gate Bridge (Untertorbrcke) spans the Aare River, like an ancient passage that connects Berne's past and present. It is located at the easternmost point of the Enge peninsula in Bern, Switzerland, connecting the Mattequartier and Schosshalde districts of the Old Town of Bern. Built between 1461 and 1489, the Lower Gate Bridge is the oldest bridge on the Aare River in Bern, and was the only bridge in the city before the mid-19th century.
