What people are saying:

San Giorgio Maggiore is an island in the Venetian lagoon. It sits directly across from San Marco and is most known for its church and bell tower. The church and monastery are a popular ferry ride for tourists visiting Venice. They also provide for a lovely scene when viewed from the top of St. Mark's Campanile.

Additional Information

The brightness and grandeur of one of Venice’s most impressive structures is almost overwhelming and it, along with the noteworthy art that adorns the interior walls, is certainly worth seeing. Architect Andrea Palladio believed the color white was the most pleasing to God and thus designed the San Giorgio Maggiore, located on an island of the same name, to be largely decorated with white marble. A monastery existed on the island from 790 A.D. but was mostly destroyed by an earthquake in 1223. The magnificent structure that now dominates the island was completed in 1566. For an excellent view of the city, ride the elevator ride to top of the bell tower for a small fee.
