Obelisk of TheodosiusNearby City
Even in a city with an extensive history, the Obelisk of Theodosius in Istanbul, Turkey stands out as the remains of a far earlier time. The Egyptian ruler Thutmose III constructed it in the Temple of Karmak in the 15th century BCE. Byzantine emperors have twice brought it to their preferred location to memorialize themselves, first to Alexandria in 357, and then to its present location in 390. Today a little more than half the original 30 meters remains of this granite spike because of damage done during these trips, but what is left still inspires awe.
