Clifford's Tower, York

The Clifford Tower was built by William the Conqueror to suppress the rebellious North, and was once a Royal Mint, a medieval fortress and a Civil War garrison. One of the worst anti-Semitic massacres of the Middle Ages occurred on the site of the tower in 1190, when the Jewish community in York was trapped by a mob and many Jews chose to commit suicide rather than murder. Today, a new roof terrace offers unparalleled views of York's historic skyline, with its medieval architecture and famous cathedrals. Inside, new sidewalks and staircases open parts of the tower that have been banned for centuries, immersive soundscapes and stories bring to life the tower's turbulent history.

The Clifford Tower, first built by William the Conqueror, is a wooden fortress, part of the York castle, standing on a hill at the intersection of the Uth and Forth rivers southeast of the Old Town. At that time, the tower and York castle were surrounded by moats, and the tower was connected by a suspension bridge between the castle and the outside by a stone bridge.

In 1190, a violent riot occurred in Clifford Tower, where some Christian merchants tried to destroy the Jewish community in order to pay their debts to Jewish bankers, and 150 Jews who survived the disaster fled to the original site of Clifford Tower and were forced to commit suicide.
