The Geneva Water Fountain

The tall column of water that rises up into the sky directly from the lake is spectacular. The artificial fountain was originally built in 1891 and was only 90 meters high. It is powered by two sets of underwater pumps, weighing 16 tons, driven by a 500 kW 2,400 volt engine that reaches 1,500 rpm.

The attraction next to Lake Geneva, before I went to see this attraction introduction, I didn’t understand what the fountain was. When I really saw it, I felt shocked. The rainbow suddenly appeared with the water column. It was so beautiful.

The fountain sprays water columns up to 140 meters high and are a must-see attraction in Geneva. It is said that in the 19th century this fountain was a safety valve for the hydropower station. When Geneva channeled water through hydraulic devices to the clockwork workshop distributed on the banks of the Rhone, in order not to overpressure the water pipes, people opened the valve when the workshop closed at night so that water was sprayed through the valve. The fountain is a prototype. It starts in early March to mid-October each year and the scenery is great, overlooking the mountains, St. Peter's Basilica on the top of the old city, the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva on the other side, and surrounded by flower parks. But the fountain is open for 24 hours, and it is not open when the wind is strong.
