Photos of Sponza Palace

The Sponza Palace was built in 1516, combining Gothic and Renaissance styles, and was designed by Paskoje Milicevic, a talented engineer of the Republic of Dubrovnik at the time. Originally a customs house, at the end of the 16th century, the Sponza Palace became the cultural center of the Republic, where educated citizens established specialized colleges. Today's Sponza Palace seems to stand still in the long river of time, graceful and dignified guarding the precious historical documents in the collection. The square in front of the Sponza Palace is where the opening ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival took place.
