Marmaris is a port city located in southwestern Turkey. As early as the 6th century BC, it was a small fishing village that began to take shape. Marmaris has been of great military significance since the Middle Ages. In 1522, when the Ottoman Sultan Suleimand the Great launched the campaign against Rhodes, it was the castle of Marmaris that assumed the role of the forward base. . In recent years, with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture, the castle has been converted into a museum that hosts exhibitions of cultural relics and artworks throughout the year. Marmaris' main source of income now is tourism, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers during peak tourist season. What was once a small fishing village has now flourished, while the special natural beauty still retains its unique charm. Marmaris' nightlife is one of the best among Turkish coastal ports, and it is also an important seaport hub and sailing center in southwestern Turkey.
