Old China Cafe

Finally back to Kuala Lumpur, after traveling around the island for nearly half a month, I want to go home. In this old Chinese coffee shop in Chinatown, under the dim light, there are photos of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek on the wall, and the background music is the voice of the old Shanghai gramophone. The cover of the menu is a traditional Chinese flower and bird painting, and the waiter speaks Cantonese and English. A teapot pours thick black traditional Nanyang coffee. Couplets on both sides of a large mirror: Children understand the love of fragrant grass, how can God ever regret the fallen flowers. ​

This is a time-honored coffee shop on Petaling Street. They serve good Nyonya dishes and Chinese tea. I feel that the tea here is more authentic than that in Shanghai. The Nyonya nasi lemak is delicious, and the main ingredients are great.

There is a very famous Nyonya restaurant on Cichang Street, and the food is tailored to Chinese tastes. The price here is a little bit higher than other places, but the soups are very good and go well with rice.

OldChinaCafe is quite famous in Kuala Lumpur and is loved by locals. The restaurant offers dishes with Southeast Asian flavors, commonly known as Nyonya cuisine. The restaurant is decorated in a very antique style. Curry fish head, laksa and other dishes are delicious. It is really a pleasure to have an old-fashioned breakfast here.

A nostalgic Nyonya restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, the mottled old buildings have a unique flavor. The signature dish, fish cooked with mackerel fillet and assam sauce, is tender and the spicy and slightly sour sauce is particularly appetizing. Crispy water spinach is stir-fried with slightly spicy shrimp paste to create a Malay flavor, a simple but delicious home-cooked dish. You may also order the blue flower rice cooked with coconut milk and added with blue flower juice for color, which will satisfy your taste buds.

Old China Cafe, which is more Chinese than China, actually has no Chinese name! It is located in an alley outside Petaling Street and is not easy to find. The restaurant opens at 11:30. We were turned away because we arrived too early. The boss strictly abided by the time and did not let us in to sit and wait. The restaurant is decorated in an antique style. The walls are covered with old photos of the boss's ancestors' initial life in Nanyang and Chinese calligraphy. The old phonograph plays old songs with charm such as Nanping Evening Bell. Soon the restaurant was full of people. In addition to the Chinese who came here for the reputation, there were also two tables of Europeans. The mixed-race guy didn't seem to be very good at Chinese, but it was relatively smooth to order in English throughout the whole process. Recommend Nyonya Little Golden Cup and Coconut Milk Laksa! The Little Golden Cup fried the cup-shaped dough until golden and crispy, and put all kinds of shredded vegetables inside; the laksa soup is rich, mellow and sweet! The rest of the Rendang beef and Nyonya chicken, I personally think the meat is a bit old and the spices are too strong. The iced white coffee is good, cool and fragrant!

Walk from Petaling Street towards the busy street Jalan Sultan. When you reach Jalan Sultan, cross the road to the opposite street, go forward, turn right to Jalan Balai Polis and you will see the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple. The Old China Café is just opposite. If you can't find it, ask for directions. If you still can't find it, come back the next day. As long as you work hard, you will be rewarded. This is an old house before the war, which was converted into a cafe. The decorations in the store are like going back to the old times. The yellowed ceiling, marble tables and chairs, old refrigerator, old fan, and old clock. There are large mirrors on both sides of the store, and there are also couplets. On one side, you can understand "Children understand how to pity the fragrant grass. Heaven has never cherished the fallen flowers", and on the other side, it is the stone drum script, which is still incomprehensible when read upside down.

Old China Cafe is a hidden shop in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. It was opened in 1920. It is a two-story building with a restaurant on the first floor and a teahouse on the second floor. The old-fashioned phonograph plays popular songs from the 1930s in old Shanghai, which reminds you of Maggie Cheung's In the Mood for Love. The restaurant sells old Chinese antiques. It has been run by three generations of Chinese and still retains its ancient charm. It mainly serves Nyonya dishes. [Coconut Blue Thick Sauce Rice] is also one of the signature dishes. The light coconut sand is paired with coffee chicken and puff pastry. It boldly combines Indian flavors, which may be related to the fact that the boss lady is Indian. [White Coffee] Listening to the songs and drinking coffee in an elegant place with lingering fragrance is particularly appropriate. [Nyonya Wonderful Mixed Vegetables] A large alliance of various local vegetables, the taste is acceptable. In general, the taste of Malay dishes is similar. This one is pretty good regardless of the taste and price.
