Congtai Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
The ancient city of a thousand years—Handan
Handan is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, located in the southern part of Hebei Province. It is a national historical and cultural city, an excellent tourism city in China, a national garden city, a national model city for supporting the military, and the capital of Chinese idiomatic expressions. As of July 2023, Handan administers 6 districts, 11 counties, and 1 county-level city. Some introductions are as follows:
- Historical Culture: Handan is an ancient city with a history of nearly three thousand years and was the capital of the State of Zhao during the Warring States period. It is the birthplace and growth place of Qin Shi Huang, and also the site of the story 'Learning to Walk in Handan' from the Warring States period.
- Tourism Resources: Handan boasts numerous scenic spots, such as Huiche Alley, Xuebu Bridge, and Congtai Park. Among them, the Wahuang Palace in She County is known as the 'Ancestral Temple of China' and is the largest and earliest ancient building dedicated to the worship of the ancient goddess Nüwa in China.
- Economic Development: Handan is a heavy industrial city dominated by steel, coal, electricity, and building materials. It has large steel enterprises such as Handan Iron and Steel and Tiangang, and is also one of China's important cotton-producing areas and textile bases.
- Transportation: Handan is the only mega-city at the junction of four provinces, bordering Shanxi, Shandong, and Henan provinces. It is an important transportation hub in North China, with complete transportation facilities including railways, highways, and aviation.
So this is what the birthplace of my handsome and charming ancestor looks like
Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall
Not far from the south gate of Congtai Park, there is a Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall. There is a group of antique buildings from the main road, and the south gate is bypassed to the south, with the sign of 'Qin Shi Huang Birthplace Memorial Hall' above.
Enter the main entrance, there are stables, flower ponds, rockeries, pavilions and other antique facilities in the courtyard. I think this courtyard is probably built based on the imagined proton house.
The house facing the gate of the courtyard is the exhibition hall. The exhibition hall introduces the origin of Qin Shi Huang and Handan and the life of Qin Shi Huang in the form of exhibition boards.
Qin Shi Huang, as an emperor of all ages, can be said to be too legendary, and his origin with Handan is also very deep. Tracing back, it can even be associated with Zhao Wuling King and Mi Yue across time and space. There are many mysteries about Qin Shi Huang.
The Handan Wuling Congtai Hanfu has become popular
The towering Congtai stands in the ancient city of Handan, originally with many connected gatherings, hence the name Congtai. It is said to have been built during the time of King Wuling of Zhao, also known as Wuling Congtai. The king of Zhao built the platform for military reviews and for pleasure in music and dance. There were verses about the beauty of the music on the platform and the shining warriors below. The ancient platform originally had a sky bridge, snow cave, flower garden, and decorated pavilions, with a strict structure and wonderful decorations that were famous among the countries.
Recently, the Handan Congtai Hanfu has become popular, and many beautiful young ladies are taking pictures in Hanfu. It's quite cold recently, so it's recommended for young ladies who want to take pictures in Hanfu to dress warmer. It's really photogenic, and you can go back to the Warring States period in a second. There are Hanfu travel photography at the park entrance.
Also, give a score to my hometown Handan, welcome everyone to Handan! A city that has been waiting for you for three thousand years.
Hebei·Handan|Congtai Park
🔥 Congtai Park, located in the city center of Handan, Hebei Province, is the earliest constructed and quite large park in Handan, centered around Wuling Congtai, and has been developed into a large-scale historical and cultural park.
🔅Congtai Park is named after Wuling Congtai in the park center, which is said to have been built during the period of King Wuling of Zhao (325-299 BC), and has a history of more than 2000 years. The total area of Congtai Park is 360 acres, with classical buildings, pavilions, and towers hidden among the green pines and willows, reflecting the mountain scenery and lake light, and reflecting the light boats. Today's Congtai Park has become a symbol of Handan city.
🎫Visiting Congtai Park does not require a ticket. But if you want to climb Wuling Congtai and experience the feeling of King Zhao's army, you need to pay 5 yuan for the platform fee.
➕On the right side of Wuling Congtai is a stele forest-style museum, if you have bought the ticket to climb Wuling Congtai, you can visit it together.

Xiangtangshan Grottoes Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Pathfinder Episode 16: Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes
Handan, Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes.
There are not many grottoes, a total of seven holes, most of the Buddha statues have no Buddha heads, some are also made up later.
The Nanxiangtang Mountain Grottoes flourished in the Northern Qi Dynasty, and it has a history of more than 1500 years. Most of the Buddha statues have been touched by later generations to become black and shiny. From the structure, only the seventh cave is a corridor surrounding the central Buddha statue column, and the rest are single rooms.
The grottoes are desolate!
Even if it is as hard as a stubborn stone, it can't withstand the butcher knife of time, let alone the hundred pounds of flesh of you and me?
Let go, let go...
Break away from it
The renowned Xiangtangshan Grottoes overseas
The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are the largest existing treasure trove of stone carving art from the Northern Qi Dynasty in China. It belongs to the third phase of the Northern Dynasty stone carving art. In terms of carving art, it inherits the skills of the Northern Wei and Eastern Wei Dynasties, and initiates the new trend of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, thus creating a grotto art with Chinese national style and era characteristics.
At that time, unknown Chinese artisans, based on mastering the traditional skills of their ancestors in painting, sculpture, architecture, etc., absorbed and integrated the techniques of Indian and Gandhara Buddhist sculpture art, and after the development of the first two phases, gradually blended into the traditional sculpture art of China. The form of the grottoes, the image of the statues, the face, the clothing, the patterns, etc., have basically completed the process of nationalization.
The 'Xiangtangshan Grottoes' in Handan, Hebei, represent the artistic peak of the turbulent Northern Qi Dynasty
🗺 Overview of Xiangtangshan
❤️The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are listed as the first batch of cultural relics protection units and are also a must-see attraction in Handan. Due to inconvenient transportation and the need to climb more than 700 steps, there are not many tourists here, but it is suitable for appreciating art treasures in such a quiet environment.
❤️The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are located in the Fengfeng Mining Area of Handan City, and the grottoes were first excavated during the Northern Qi Dynasty. There are 16 existing grottoes, more than 450 cliff statues, more than 5000 large and small statues, and a large number of scriptures and inscriptions. The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are divided into North Xiangtangshan, South Xiangtangshan and Little Xiangtangshan. This article first introduces the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes, which has 9 caves, among which the Big Buddha Cave is the most shocking.
❤️Perhaps it is because you can watch and touch at close range, and there are few tourists. After seeing Mogao Grottoes and Yungang, I feel that Xiangtangshan Grottoes are more shocking and beautiful in comparison! ✨
⭐️Xiangtangshan Grottoes are known as the fifth largest grottoes in China. Although the scale of the grottoes is not very large, the style of the grottoes is very unique, which can represent the art, culture and Buddhist history of the Northern Qi Dynasty. What is regrettable is that many Buddha heads in the grottoes have been stolen, and the damage is quite serious. However, it is precisely because of this that everything that exists now is more worth protecting for future generations, perhaps this is the charm of Xiangtangshan Grottoes.
🚩Tour tips:
🚙Travel mode: It is recommended to rent a car or self-drive. The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are located in the Fengfeng Mining Area, more than an hour's drive from Handan city. There is no direct public transportation. If you choose to take a taxi, it is not easy to call a taxi when returning. The parking lot at the entrance of the scenic spot charges 10 yuan a day for parking at will.
💴Tickets: Full price ticket 60 yuan/person, shuttle bus 40 yuan/person. If you do not take the shuttle bus, you need to climb the mountain for more than 40 minutes. The mountain is not particularly easy to climb, but it is worth it to slowly climb up and see the scenery! (Note that the 40 yuan for the shuttle bus is one-way up the mountain. If you are physically ok, it is not recommended to do it, it is a bit expensive.) You can buy tickets directly at the entrance of the scenic spot.
🕰Tour time: It is recommended to leave 2-3 hours to slowly appreciate the North Xiangtangshan! It's really worth it!!! Especially when the sun shines from outside the grottoes to the Buddha statues inside, it's super beautiful and shocking!
📌Tour order: North Xiangtangshan Grottoes-Changle Temple-South Xiangtangshan Grottoes
Remember to go to Changle Temple after seeing the grottoes down the mountain, it is very shocking, and the Buddha heads are also stolen.
🤗Do some homework: It is recommended to watch the documentary 'Exploring Xiangtangshan Grottoes' before visiting, to simply understand the history and construction background of the grottoes, so that you can appreciate it more during the visit~

Handan
Handan is a big city, which existed more than 3100 years ago.
During the Warring States Period (403 BC - 222 BC), it was the capital of the Zhao State, lasting for as long as 158 years.
Handan is also quite impressive in that it has given birth to nearly 1600 idioms, making it the true 'Capital of Idioms' in China.
So, the first thing to do when you get to Handan is to learn, learn, and learn again. If you don't learn, you might not be able to walk, dream, or even dress.
Such important things, we must note down:
1⃣📌Dream: When in Handan, it doesn't matter if you don't have a yellow beam, dreaming is a must. Otherwise, the trip would be in vain.
2⃣📌Learn to walk: In Handan, if you don't learn to walk, you're done for. The road is long and the horse is strong, walking depends on learning. If you don't learn, you're done for.
3⃣📌Learn to dress: In Handan, you have to learn to dress. If you don't wear Hu clothes, how can you rise? Wearing Hu clothes, eating Hu meals, speaking Hu language, only when you have mastered the 'Three Hus', can you ascend to the Western Paradise. If you can't master it, you're really done for!
Wa Huang Palace

It is listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage. During the temple fair in March of the lunar calendar, people from all over the country and overseas Chinese come to worship the cultural ancestors of the Chinese nation, so Wa Huang Palace has become one of the national ancestral worship sites, known as the "Ancestral Temple of China".
Wa Huang Palace architecture is known as the "Living Building Hanging Temple", it is the largest and earliest ancient architectural complex for worshipping Nuwa in the country. The architectural style is based on cliffs and caves, and it is built according to the mountain situation, using the principle of high-rise building center of gravity deviation safety rate, integrating cultural heritage and ancient architectural wonders.
The Northern Qi cliff carving sutra is the oldest and most valuable cultural relic in Shexian Wa Huang Palace. It is known as the "First Wall Sutra Group in the World". It is the place with the most words in the existing cliff carving sutras in China. Off-the-beaten-path recommendation | The temple where Nüwa repaired the sky and created humans, suspended by iron chains on the edge of a cliff.
You can't imagine that there is such a niche place, which is the place where the mythological story of Nüwa mending the sky and creating humans took place. What's even more magical is that on the halfway up the cliff, there is a temple that is over 1400 years old. This temple is only connected to the mountain by 9 iron chains. It is breathtaking from afar and amazing up close, which is truly astonishing. This is the Nüwa Palace in Handan.
💫About the Palace of Empress Wa

It was first built in the Northern Qi Dynasty and has a history of more than 1400 years. It is the place where the mythical figure Nüwa repaired the sky with stones and created humans from clay.
🌠Recommended highlights
🔸Palace of Empress Wa
The most exquisite part of the Palace of Empress Wa‼️ The Palace of Empress Wa is located on the steep mountain slope and dangerous terrain, resembling a grand armchair from afar. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with the Azure Dragon on the left and the White Tiger on the right. Below the mountain is the Zhang River, which is very spectacular.
👉Features:
-Has a history of over 1400 years.
-Connected to the mountain only by 9 iron chains.
On the halfway up the cliff, hanging there are the "Hanging Temple" and the "Activity Building".
⛰️How to get there❓
From the entrance of the scenic area, take the sightseeing electric car to the square. The one-way fare for the sightseeing electric car is 10 yuan/person, and the round-trip fare is 20 yuan/person. It is recommended to take it. Then, climb up to the Wa Huang Palace on the half-mountain from the square in the following way:
1. Hiking and mountain climbing
Seemingly high, but actually doesn't require a long climb. It's recommended to choose mountain climbing as long as your knees are okay. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the top, and it's not very tiring. If it's a holiday or peak season with many people, it's better to choose hiking, which will be faster.
2. Cable car + hiking
Cable car one-way ticket costs 40 yuan/person. Take the cable car from the drop-off point of the sightseeing electric car, and then walk for another 20 minutes. The path is mostly flat, with stairs only towards the end. This is suitable for those who are older or have knee problems and cannot walk up stairs. However, taking the cable car does not mean less walking or saving time. On the contrary, it may waste more time.
If it's a holiday or peak season with lots of people, don't choose the cable car. You'll queue until you break down, so it's better to hike up the mountain.
3. Sightseeing sled.
Often closed, if open, you can choose to slide down the mountain with less effort.
‼️In short, it is recommended to take the sightseeing bus back and forth when entering the gate, unless you have knee problems and cannot climb stairs. Cable car is not recommended. It is suggested to hike up and down the mountain, which is not very high.
🔸Heavenly Square
Here you can see the statue of Nüwa and the majestic Nüwa Palace on the tall and steep mountain behind it. It is a spectacular and breathtaking location for photography.
❤️Small tips:
Here are many selling prayer gourds (small gourd for 15 yuan, big gourd for 20 yuan) and small stone lucky bags (two stones for 10 yuan).
🚘Transportation guide
From the city center of Handan, you can choose to drive, charter a car, take public transportation and then take a taxi to get to the Wa Huang Palace.
1. Self-driving:
From the city center of Handan, it's about 100 kilometers to the Wa Huang Palace. You can take National Highway 309 or the Qinglan Expressway. There are quite a few large trucks on the road, but there are plenty of parking spaces in the scenic area.
2. Charter:
For renting a car in Handan, the price is around 300 yuan per day. Taking a ride on a ride-sharing platform costs a little over 100 yuan, but sometimes the driver may ask for an extra 50 yuan, and there aren't many ride-sharing options, so it's luck-based.
3. Public transportation + taxi:
Take a train from Handan Station to Shexian, then take a taxi to the scenic area for about 20 yuan.
💰Admission ticket
Scenic area ticket is 70 yuan, platform discount ticket is 60 yuan, sightseeing bus one-way ticket is 10 yuan/person, cable car one-way ticket is 40 yuan/person.
❤️Money-saving tip: Buy a ticket for Handan scenic area one day in advance, which includes Wa Huang Palace. You can break even by visiting just one attraction, and also visit other attractions in Handan (such as Nangongshan, Jingniang Lake, Guangfu Ancient Town, etc.), which is very cost-effective.

Hebei's most beautiful rural tourism recommendation: Maning Homestay
If beauty can heal the soul, please leave me in the Taihang Mountains.
Ancient trails in the mountain streams, stone ladders on the cliffs,
Winding paths, steep stone paths,
I don't know how much distance I've covered,
Spring, summer, autumn and winter, dawn and dusk,
Only then am I fortunate to appreciate the majestic Taihang.
Here, there are the majestic views from the top of Taihang,
There are dense primeval forests,
There are geological parks with strange rocks and dangerous peaks,
There are magnificent and beautiful grand canyons;
The water is as clear as jade, and the mountains are as beautiful as poetry and painting.
Where there are mountains, there are wonders, where there are waters, there are beauties,
It's a work of nature, a wonderful landscape.
Looking up, it's the sky shrouded in clouds and mist,
Looking down, it's the majestic Taihang in full view,
It gathers the beauty of all provinces, and the wonders of all seas,
Streams, mountains, and forests, all in different colors.
The land is rich and nourishing, fostering all kinds of beauty,
Everything is in harmony, forming a poetic picture of water and wood,
I think, as long as you come, you will surely fall in love with this place.
Hebei's mountains are surprisingly beautiful with fresh air, a getaway from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou
The name 'Man Ning' is derived from one character of the names of the couple who own the guesthouse, adding a romantic atmosphere.
