Kronborg Palace, meaning "Palace of Crowns", is located in Helsingor, a fortress town north of Copenhagen, adjacent to the Sond Strait between Denmark and Sweden. Kronborg Palace is also known as Hamlet Castle because of the famous background of the famous play "Hamlet". In 2000 Kronborg Palace was listed as a World Heritage Site. The history of Kronborg Palace dates back to 1420, when King Frederick II of Denmark officially named it "Kronborg" in 1577. The palace is built of rock, and the brown copper roof is imposing and majestic. There is a monumental relief statue of Shakespeare on the wall of the outer courtyard of the palace. According to legend, Shakespeare wrote the immortal tragedy "Hamlet" in the background of Kronborg Palace. Every summer, a series of special Hamlet-themed events take place at Kronborg Palace. Those who are interested can join the "Hamlet"-themed guided tour starting at 12:30 noon every day, and the ticket price is 50 crowns. The interior of Kronborg Palace is now mainly open to the public as a museum, displaying a large number of antique furniture, oil paintings, tapestries, and wood carvings. The king and queen's two bedrooms are beautifully decorated and luxurious: the ornate doorway, the oil painting ceiling, the marble fireplace are all worth seeing. The ballroom in the palace is the largest banquet hall in northern Europe, with black and white marble floors, ornate crystal chandeliers, and paintings hanging on the surrounding walls dating back to the 17th century. The underground fortifications on the ground floor of the palace are also now open to the public, and the king's bedroom was once built with secret passages leading to it. During the war, it was used to secretly train soldiers and defend against foreign enemies. The underground fortifications house Kronborg's more popular statue - a bronze statue named "Holger the Dane", the legendary Danish hero dressed in military uniform and sleeping with his sword in hand. According to legend, he made great contributions during the war. Although there was no war in the future, he also kept a seated position when sleeping as a warning.
