Helsinki Cathedral Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
While walking to Orthodox Cathedral in Helsinki, Finland. You can see and enjoy walking along the seashore. Lots of seagulls are flying there. Walking time from Train station is just about 10 to 15minutes. Also you can find some store tents their selling some souvenirs, fruits, wine and the Finnish streets food. Maybe it is better to visit this place during weekdays, because the Cathedral is closed during weekends. #helsinki #cathedral #orthodox

Classical and modern aesthetics
Helsinki Cathedral, also known as the White Church. In winter, the square in front of the church is covered with snow, warm lights are lit, and the whole church is holy.
In the magnificent building, there are many exquisite murals and sculptures. Whenever the church bell rings, the whole square falls silent, and many tourists quietly feel this precious moment of peace that only religion can bring to the soul.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00
Saturday 9:00-17:00, Sunday 12:00-18:00

The hottest season is from July to August, when the temperature difference between day and night is large, you can consider wearing a long sleeve, a short sleeve, a pair of jeans or slacks.
Finnish weather is cold, even in September and October, you need to wear a thick windbreaker. In winter, the minimum temperature will reach minus 30 degrees Celsius, and the highest temperature is also minus 4-5 °C. Travelers need to wear thick down jackets and thermal underwear during winter travel. However, as long as Helsinki is indoors or in the car, it is still full of heat. If you can't stand the cold weather in winter, you can visit some indoor scenic spots.

Helsinki City-Ferry to its Island
Did you know Helsinki has a ferry line, that belong to the public transport network? With an AB-ticket you can take the ferry to Helsinki's eight islands Suomenlinna or Sveaborg (Swedish) about four kilometer southeast of Helsinki.
Helsinki Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site. I took the trip in winter and there was even ice on the sea. Beautiful!
🛳️ The little ferry leaves every 30-60 minutes from the central port in Helsinki.

Exploring Helsinki
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a city renowned for its design, sea-facing landscape, and vibrant cultural scene. Combining contemporary architecture with classic Nordic traditions, Helsinki offers a tranquil yet dynamic urban environment, making it a fascinating destination for travelers seeking both innovation and history.
What to Expect
Helsinki’s design scene is integral to its identity, with the city being named a UNESCO City of Design. The Design District encompasses several blocks of shops, galleries, and cafes, where local and international designers display their work. Architectural highlights include the futuristic Oodi Library and the historic Helsinki Cathedral. The city's relationship with nature is also evident in its abundant parks and waterfront areas, which offer peaceful retreats from the urban hustle.
Experiences and Recommendations
A visit to Suomenlinna, a sea fortress spread across six islands, provides a scenic and historical day trip accessible by a short ferry ride. The fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers walking paths, museums, and cafes. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the contemporary Kiasma Museum, as well as the more traditional National Museum of Finland, which provides insights into Finnish history and culture. For a taste of local life, explore the Hakaniemi Market Hall where you can sample Finnish delicacies and shop for handmade crafts.
Tips and Tricks
The best time to visit Helsinki is during the summer months when the city enjoys long, light days and temperatures are comfortable for exploring. However, if you're after a winter wonderland experience, visiting in December through February offers a chance to see Helsinki covered in snow, with opportunities for ice skating and other winter sports. Public transportation is efficient and covers all parts of the city, making it easy to get around without a car.
Personal Reflections
Walking along the shoreline of Helsinki, watching boats drift by against a backdrop of modern architecture juxtaposed with old world buildings, was exceptionally calming. The city’s commitment to public spaces and cultural heritage makes it a model for urban living, where history and progress harmonize beautifully.
Helsinki's charm lies in its ability to maintain a serene, orderly atmosphere while promoting cutting-edge design and culture. This unique blend makes it an ideal destination for those looking to immerse themselves in a progressive yet deeply traditional urban setting.

Temppeliaukion Church - The Stone Church
#celebratewithtrip
A must-try attraction when you visit Helsinki. Very beautiful, peaceful and holy place to not only Christians but also tourists. A special church was created by carving into a huge stone. So the locals call it as "the stone church".
Beautiful rock church open daily from 10am - 7 pm except Sundays. They offer 15 minute tours in English and Finnish. Cost to get in is 5 euro. Very lovely.

layover in Helsinki for 3hrs
I arrived at the Helsinki airport in the morning for a layover. I decided to sightsee the city of Helsinki during the layover for just 7hours, including the passport security which took almost 1 hour. I headed to the Templeliaukio church via Uber. I should have taken the train since it was way cheaper than Uber and similar time. The church was so impressive. As shown the picture, there was a 9 foot size Steinway grand piano. I wish I could play that piano and heard the sound which resonate the hall. Just looking closer at the piano and the pipe organ was content. I uploaded the video of visiting the Temppiaukio church at my YouTube channel called StoneMing. #helsinki #layover
Helsinki may be small, but it's a place where cold and warmth coexist
Most people come to Helsinki because they have to transfer here for most of the day, so I did a lot of research before I came. Many friends chose the one-day or even half-day travel guides provided by many people. At that time, I was thinking that I could play so much, maybe the two and a half days itinerary could be filled up. But after coming here, I found out that maybe it's not everyone's fault, this city is really small, so small that you can finish most of the check-in spots in this city without even taking a transportation tool for a whole day.
But, although Helsinki is small, there may also be places that are really worth it here.
Although it has been raining for three consecutive days, you can also take the photos you have been looking forward to here. There are unique positions of the red and white church taken by one person walking on the main street of the city when the sky is not bright in the early morning; there is a peaceful atmosphere felt in the temple square church built by stone piles, surrounded by candles and listening to organ music; there is a Christmas atmosphere in the Nordic countries, although not much, but still exists; since it is rainy, then here may really only belong to the rainy night, two days to walk through the whole city, also took the tram at night that I have been thinking about since I left Lisbon.
This place may not really be a foodie's paradise, even the famous deer meat may not be anything special (friends feel like beef after eating), but at least you can drink to your heart's content at Kappeli, and the salmon soup is very delicious.
This place also proves the environmental awareness of the Nordic people. The first feeling of coming to Helsinki is orderly. The tram shuttling through the city is the most convenient transportation tool in this city, making the whole city look particularly neat and quiet. Even in the heavy rain, the streets and every shop you walk into are clean and tidy, with classified trash cans and electric scooters everywhere, the best quality drinking water in the world, and the tram station and city architecture style that look cold and simple enough in the Nordic style. In the wooden house hotel built by the mountain forest where I chose to stay on the second day, almost everything is recyclable. From the restaurant to the furnishings and materials in the room, almost all are made of recyclable wood. Try not to buy new ones. Even the building itself is said to be bought from the activity center here by the front desk sister, jokingly saying that even the building itself is recycled, including the amount of breakfast will not be too much to avoid unnecessary waste. Even here there is a quite special habit, that is, the number of times to clean the house, the front desk sister said if the guest stays for a long time, whether to clean or not during the period is according to the customer's wishes, if the customer does not require cleaning, generally for sustainable development, will choose to clean once every three days, the resources that can be saved can be used to plant a tree for free. It can be said that here, environmental protection can be felt everywhere, and it is also an element and topic that everyone is consciously abiding by.
Although Helsinki is cold, there are also warm places, such as the warmest library I have ever seen, in the central library of the hymn, for the first time I saw resources that can be used by everyone, sewing machines, 3D printers, meeting rooms, and some engineering design machines I have never seen before, even a whole floor of a huge bookstore and children's play area, children crawling on the ground, adults playing with them. It's raining heavily outside, Finland is very cold, but here it makes people feel extremely warm.
The purpose of this trip to Denmark and Finland is to experience more about Nordic sustainable development related things, just this point is worth it, not to mention that I took so many photos that I feel shocked. This city may really be suitable for those who are willing to walk in the street with an umbrella, or walk into a coffee shop or restaurant on the street at will, willing to sit by the window, looking at the rain outside the window in a daze. Come here, don't deliberately pursue the time you chase me, it's not worth your time, and don't want you to ignore its most precious place because of the rush of the itinerary. So maybe every city has its own special and proud places, don't go too deep, this city may be like those two red and white castles, quietly watching the time flow, it doesn't belong to anyone, you just need to find the point you like it, maybe this is the meaning of travel.
Finland's most iconic rock church
does not see the splendour of the traditional church and the cascading steps, which look like a flying saucer. The faade of the thick rocky base will be missed if you don't pay attention to it. Inadvertently through the tunnel-like entrance, drill into this rock church, you will find that there is a hole in the sky.
There is no master sculpture, no icon, no gorgeous decoration. The walls of the church are rock. The front is a simple altar with a huge dome above it. Above the rock is a skylight that shines into the sky. Light of the light. On the edge of the altar, the female violinist plays an elegant tunes and listens quietly like a scorpio.
This famous European church was built from a single piece of rock, designed by the famous designer Somaran Brothers, and completed in 1969. Standing outside the church, you can see a huge rock that does not see the spires and bell towers of the church. The bronze vault of the church makes people feel that they are not in the ground. Because the hall is ring-shaped, the sound effect is very good. In addition to religious activities, various concerts including symphonies are held from time to time.
Finland is also known as the capital of design. The rock church is unique throughout Europe. The entire church is surrounded by a huge rock interior. It is very strange and the design is very creative. Only when entering the church can the business find his shock, the mysterious design, and the Finns' advocating natural and simple aesthetic feelings are fully reflected here.

Uspenski Cathedral Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Uspenski Cathedral - Helsinki, Finland
Located in the city centre of Helsinki, the Uspenski Cathedral is also one of the most famous structure in Finland.
This is a Greek Orthodox cathedral, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary). It was built in 1868.
It was a pity during my trip, the cathedral was closed thus unable to go inside. But if you’re in Helsinki, I would recommend you heading in to have a look, as admission is free!
#tripblazers #helsinki #finland #cathedral #darwintravel #europe
Built between 1862 and 1868, the Uspenski Cathedral is striking in its golden-green domes and red brick walls, with Russian architecture. Perhaps most people think that its name is hard to remember, and more people like to call the Red Church here.
The color and style of the red church are full of mysterious colors. The thirteen golden domes of the church, and the quaint red brick faade, between the contours of the city of Helsinki, highlight the traces left by Russia in the Finnish religion. The conspicuous gold domes and red-brick churches are extraordinarily dignified, and the two large trees next to each other are in harmony with the church, which is a testimony to the infiltration of Russian customs into Finnish history.
It is said that these 13 golden domes represent Jesus and his 12 disciples. The largest golden dome in the middle represents Jesus. The cost is about 80,000 Euros. The 12 small gold domes around him cost around 4 to 60,000 Euros. The 13 gold-plated onion-headed gold domes were re-plated by the Orthodox Church in 2008 and then installed. The red bricks in the main part of the building were fired in a brick factory in northern Finland and shipped here. The interior of the
red church is even more amazing than the outside! The sculpted vaults and granite pillars are the two main features of the Uspensky Cathedral. The paintings inside the church were completed by Russian painters, completely retaining the artistic style of the traditional Orthodox Church. It is the largest Greek Orthodox church on Scandinavia. Churches in Europe are cumbersome and heavy, like a piece of art, but with a unique soul.
Beautiful Church in downtown
Iconic landmark at Helsinki. Must visit place at Helsinki. Absolutely gorgeous church and landmark of Helsinki,Video and photography are allowed inside the church.
It’s located at an elevated part of land which is just beside the market square and with few steps to climb up but gives an amazing view of the entire city from that height.
