Gaomiao Ancient Town is located in the southwestern part of Sichuan's Hongya County. Several kilometers away from the county seat, it is bordered to the east by Emei Mountain, to the south by Yiwawu Mountain, to the west by Lianyuping Mountain and to the north by the western Sichuan Plains. Dating back to the late Ming Dynasty, the name of the town is a blend of the name of the local Temple of the Earth God and the altitude of the old market town. From the Qing Dynasty, the town gradually became more prosperous. The territory around Gaomiao is rich in mineral resources such as copper, iron and limestone, and in herbal medicines such as Coptis Root and Gastrodia.
