Hue Historic Citadel Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
The city,
The Imperial City of Hue, also known as the Citadel, is a large complex located in Hue, Vietnam. It was once the political and cultural center of the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. Today, the Imperial City is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful architecture, rich history, and cultural significance.
The Imperial City was constructed in the early 19th century, during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. It took over 30 years to complete, with work continuing under successive rulers. The complex covers an area of 520 hectares, with walls that are 10 meters high and 21 meters thick, surrounded by a moat that is 30 meters wide. The main entrance is through the Ngo Mon Gate, which is decorated with intricate carvings and elaborate roof details.
Inside the Citadel, there are numerous buildings, including palaces, temples, and administrative offices. These structures are arranged in a series of courtyards and gardens, each with its own unique design and purpose. Some of the most notable buildings include the Thai Hoa Palace, which was used for important ceremonies and official receptions, and the Forbidden Purple City, which was the private residence of the Emperor and his family.
The architecture of the Imperial City is a blend of traditional Vietnamese and French styles, reflecting the influences of both cultures during the time of its construction. The buildings are characterized by their colorful roofs, ornate carvings, and intricate details, including dragon motifs and depictions of mythical creatures.
The Imperial City of Hue is also known for its cultural significance. It was the site of many important events in Vietnamese history, including the coronation of emperors and the signing of important treaties. The complex was heavily damaged during the Vietnam War, but many of the buildings have since been restored, making it a must-see destination for visitors to Vietnam.
Hue Imperial City
Gorgeous Hue Imperial City and Citadel is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most of the buildings in the complex belong to the 19th century. Some of the buildings are now under the reconstruction, but it doesn't spoil the overall impression.
You can take fantastic pictures there especially on a sunny day starting with the gate which is framed by flowery trees. Try to avoid large crowds of tourist coming on the weekdays closer to 4pm.
What is interesting about Hue in the win
What is interesting about Hue in the winter?
If you love the cold and want to see the romantic rain of Hue, the winter from September to December will be the most beautiful time of Hue tourism.
You will be immersed in a peaceful life, blending in calm space, strolling on romantic streets, enjoying tasty dishes such as Corn juice, dried squid, etc.
Unlike other cities, the rain caused problems for your trip, but for Hue, on the contrary, the rains of Hue become the unique feature in this place, as Hue has the highest amount of rain in Vietnam.
Airplane: A one-hour flight with one of the several domestic airlines either from Ha Noi city or Hanoi will get you to Hue. It costs around 300,000VND - 1,000,000VND per leg if you fly from Ha Noi city.

Phenomenal experience
Hue is a gorgeous little city in Vietnam and the Hue Imperial City is a must see. It's a well preserved UNESCO heritage sight and its the most visited attraction in the area.
Tickets are 200k VND and well worth it. You can explore the grounds and admire the amazing architecture around. The walls are great to walk from inside and out, and a lot of the structure remains the same as it has for centuries. It's quite pretty in places too with lots of colourful flowers and green grass.
You're free to roam around or can take an additional guided tour if you wish. It's easy to get to from anywhere within the city really. Highly recommended

The spirituality in Thien Mu Pagoda
#wheretogo
#ancienttown
The next destination in my Hue trip is Thien Mu Pagoda, a place where ancient beauty, history, and spirituality converge. It's a cultural treasure that offers a profound and tranquil experience for visitors. My feelings about this pagoda are a deep appreciation for its enduring elegance and the sense of connection it provides to Vietnam's rich heritage.
Historical Significance: Thien Mu Pagoda is the oldest and most iconic religious monument in Hue. It played a significant role in the nation's history, serving as a center for Buddhism and a place of protest during the Vietnam War. The pagoda's association with the famous monk Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation in 1963 serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles for social justice and freedom in Vietnam.
Scenic Riverside Location: Perched on the banks of the Perfume River, the pagoda enjoys a stunning natural backdrop.
Spiritual Ambiance: The atmosphere at Thien Mu Pagoda is steeped in spirituality. It's a place of worship, meditation, and reflection.
Beautiful location and beautiful grounds and gardens. This is a will positioned location overlooking the Perfume river. Live monk monastery on grounds. This is a very old pagoda and will worth the visit. Some stairs but good for entire family. #wintergetaway

MINH MANG TOMB - Hue
Getting There - Minh Mang Tomb is only about 12 km from the center of Hue city, you can move along Highway 49, go along the Perfume River, to Tuan Bridge and go a little further to get there. Currently, the location of the mausoleum has been updated accurately on Google Maps, so you can easily go here according to the directions on the map.

Dai Hong Mon is the main door of King Minh Mang's tomb, opening the way to go inside. The gate is built from lime brick, painted in a bright, dignified red color. Dai Hong Mon is divided into 3 entrances and 24 leaf roofs decorated with exquisite dragon carp and dragon veins. According to historical records, the large door in the center of Dai Hong Mon since its construction has only opened once to bring the coffin of King Minh Mang into the mausoleum. After that, even the emperors who came to offer incense here could only enter by two side gates on either side, Ta Hong Mon and Huu Hong Mon. Today, when you come to visit, you will also enter by these two side gates.
Lau Minh Lau easily impresses visitors thanks to its outstanding red color. To get to the floor, from Sung An Palace, you can go through one of three bridges: Ta Phu (on the left), Trung Dao (in the middle) or Huu Bat (on the right). Legend has it that Minh Lau is the place for walking and sightseeing of the Nguyen Dynasty kings in the past.
With a cool, fresh space and poetic landscape, Minh Lau floor has now become a very hot check-in place for tourists every time they visit Minh Mang Tomb.

Peaceful Moments at Minh Mang Tomb, Hue
Minh Mang is the second king of Nguyen Dynasty - the last empire in Vietnam. He was best known as a strict and determined king, who ruled the country by the laws. He also had the most children in Vietnam royal history, approximately 142 babies.
The tomb reflected the lifestyle and characteristics of the King when he was alive. The architecture was symmetrical from beginning till the end, in a harmony way with nature landscapes around.
