Pinghai Ancient City, known as a "living fossil" of Lingnan culture, was built around 1385 AD. At that time, this was a military fortress. In the early days of the Hongwu era in the early Ming Dynasty, in order to withstand the thieves' power, the locals began to accumulate stones and build defensive cities to resist foreign invasion. Since the Qing Emperor Kangxi, Pinghai City has additionally built a large number of forts. This constitutes a well-lined maritime defense line. Today, although the ancient city walls have been submerged under modern houses, only the city gatehouses, city walls and several other sites have been preserved. However, slowly walking through the narrow streets and lanes, you can still see its deep historical heritage.
