Teng Yun Temple

It is a Chinese temple near the morning market. However, it looks like a Korean temple. I can’t put it in because it’s a time zone issue. As I walked along that river toward the main market of town, I saw the facade of this not-so-large Chinese temple, apparently built in 1960. For centuries Brunei was mainly a merchant. Although most people worked here after discovering oil in the 1920s, it was in the British era. Now they make up about 10 of the population and are the largest minority in the country.

Typical Chinese buildings, go at noon, and Chinese people come out from inside one after another. It is full of Chinese characters, similar to domestic ones, but very small and clean. Feel Chinese culture in a foreign country.

The Tengyun Temple in Brunei is a Buddhist temple with a large scale and incense-filled atmosphere. People who burn incense and worship Buddha at noon are flocking to the temple. Brunei is a small country with a population of 400,000. The local people tell us that there are about 30,000 Chinese. It's easy to meet Chinese people when walking in the street. They like to chat with us very much. This temple is the home of Chinese people. There is a Chinese school nearby. Parents who pick up their children will come to worship Buddha by the way. When traveling in Brunei, it's easy to consult them about any problems. We had dinner at the Imperial Hotel and came back to the lobby to call for a taxi. A Malaysian couple drove and chatted all the way. Later, they offered a 5-cent discount. Speaking of Tengyun Hall, they said that on the 11th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese Spring Festival was very lively and became a social occasion for Chinese people. Tengyun Hall is in the center of the city, next to the river, there is a morning market nearby, where many Chinese sell breakfast and chat while eating is very interesting.

Teng Yun Temple was built in the 1960s and is the oldest Chinese temple in Brunei. China’s influence has been present in Brunei for centuries. The Chinese population in Brunei came here to work following the discovery of oil in the 1920s. Now the Chinese demographic is 10% of Brunei’s population. This is the biggest minority in the country. Teng Yun Temple has a large colourful and bold exterior. Its interior is filled with hand-painted tiles telling stories from Chinese legends, joss smoke and gilded statues. Teng Yun Temple is also popular due to its location. It is opposite the Kianggeh market.
