Kenroku-en Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
The amazing Kenroku-en Garden
Having visited many gardens across Japan, Kenrokuen Garden is definitely my personal favourite! Located in Kanazawa, the garden is a strolling type landscape garden of the Edo period and is a true masterpiece of Japanese landscape design. It has rightfully earned its status as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, having been designated as a national site of scenic beauty in 1922 and as a national site of special scenic beauty in 1985. Its name is derived from combining the six attributes of a perfect landscape garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, watercourses and panoramas.
The garden appears totally natural but it's in fact man-made. It has many unique features, including the oldest Japanese fountain, raised root pine trees, a plum grove, winding streams with cherry trees on both sides. Now in early April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the sight of the pink flowers reflected in the still water is truly spectacular.
Here you can also participate in a tea ceremony, a wonderful way to experience the elegance of Japanese culture. A visit I most definitely recommend!
#Kenrokuen
Kenrokuen is a gorgeous and expansive park-like garden in the center of Kanazawa and it is the city’s major attraction. This beautiful park contains one of the top three celebrated gardens in Japan.
The garden was created over the span of several hundred years by the Maeda family, and today is one of the best examples of a strolling-style Japanese landscape garden. The garden offers something to enjoy whatever the season.
Kenrokuen is located in the center of Kanazawa City close to Kanazawa Castle Park. To get to Kenrokuen Garden from Kanazawa Station’s East Exit Bus Terminal you can take the Kanazawa Right Loop Bus from bus stop 7 or the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus from bus stop 6. Both buses take about 16 minutes and the fare is 200 yen.

Most Famous Garden Sakura
#cherryblossom2024
One of the three most famous gardens in Japan
Kenroku Garden, with its long and glorious history, is one of the main centers of attraction in Kanazawa. The Maeda clan spent several hundred years creating it. Now it is an exemplary Japanese-style garden for walking. There is something to admire here at any time of the year.
"Kenroku-en" means "a garden with six advantages": spacious, allowing you to stay in solitude, artfully equipped, corresponding to the spirit of antiquity, offering to admire beautiful panoramas and streams of water. Not every garden can boast of such characteristics.

How to get there
Kanazawa Station is easily accessible by the circular bus route or the Kenrokuen shuttle, which departs from the east exit. The shuttle ride takes 20 minutes and costs 200 yen.
If you have a JR Rail travel card, you can use one of its buses to Corimbo. Buses leave up to three times an hour.
Past and present
Kenroku-en was once the private garden of the Maeda clan, which occupied Kanazawa Castle and ruled the Kaga Principality on the territory of modern Ishikawa. In the feudal era, Maeda was one of the most powerful Japanese families and second only to the shoguns.
In 1676, Maeda Tsunamori laid out the Rentitei Landscape Park, which three hundred years later acquired all the "six virtues". In 1759, it completely burned down, but then it was restored. The park received its current name in 1822, and was opened to the public in 1874.
Time-tested peace of mind
Kenroku-en has everything that a traditional Japanese garden should have: ponds, waterfalls, stone lanterns, stone-paved paths, tea houses and artificial hills. Here you can spend at least a few hours in a calm, peaceful environment conducive to meditative practices.
Beauty all year round
Plum and sakura blossom here in spring, and in summer there are many other plants, for example, azalea. In autumn, the Japanese maple turns the garden fiery red. The tradition of admiring the scarlet maples has been called "momijigari", and Kenroku-en is perfect for such a pastime. The snow-covered pines by the pond evoke a romantic mood in winter. In January and February, the beautiful tree lighting turns on for a short time.

Trees under umbrellas
In winter, pine trees in Japanese parks are often protected by something like an umbrella made of ropes, which diverge from the pole at the top of the tree in a cone and grab the branches from top to bottom. This construction is called "yukizuri".
There is now a museum in the villa, which exhibits dolls, paintings and illustrations.

Spring in Kanazawa
#cherryblossom2024
Not as crowded as Osaka, beautiful and easy to access, we were surprised by so many cherry blossoms in Kanazawa, Japan. Next to the castle is a beautiful garden that gets busy over the weekend and is open also in the evening. The castle and garden offers many nice spots for lovely pictures and are both great places for morning jogging when it is still quiet and tranquil.

Appreciate the elegant aesthetics of Kanazawa, as graceful as gold foil and as rich as powdered snow
🌸 When the cherry blossoms in Kenrokuen Garden bloom beautifully, when the riverside lights of Asano River are lit, the whole city is filled with a romantic atmosphere. 🎐 The cherry blossoms in Kanazawa are also fleeting but extremely brilliant representatives of Japanese aesthetics, with rich craft experiences and humanistic arts intertwined, everyone is expressing their understanding of 'beauty' in a unique way.

Higashi Chaya District Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Exploring Kanazawa’s Geisha District
My first visit to Kanazawa was a delightful adventure, especially when I decided to explore the Geisha District on foot. It was like stepping into a different era, with traditional wooden houses and cobblestone streets.
One of the highlights was visiting a former Geisha house, which has been transformed into a museum. As I wandered through its halls, I couldn't help but imagine the elegant dances and enchanting conversations that took place within those walls. The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Geisha, their elaborate costumes, and their commitment to mastering various arts.
After immersing myself in the world of Geisha, I strolled through the district, passing by charming shops showcasing Kanazawa's famous gold leaf craftsmanship. Everywhere I looked, there were dazzling souvenirs and crafts coated in shimmering gold leaf, capturing the essence of this unique city.
Exploring the Geisha District on foot was a truly memorable experience. It allowed me to soak in the history, beauty, and craftsmanship of Kanazawa while feeling a sense of connection to its vibrant past.

Higashi Chaya District
#thingstodo A beautiful late evening, pre or post dinner walk is an ideal time. It's quiet not crowded at all. There are many restaurants decked everywhere and there is even a store that carries some very nice ceramic art work from this area. An enchanting place with lots of historical sights. The views are stunning, and it'll take you back in time of the samurai and shogunate era. Lots of traditional goodies to buy and excite your taste buds.
chaya District
#thingstodo Wonderful area to stroll around and get a glimpse of what life was like before modern buildings and construction. Lovely small alleys to walk down close to the river. Very picturesque and lots if photo opportunities. We we were there mid-morning on a weekday and there were not many tourists about.Comfy street to walk down with lots of small tea shops scattered around. Just a few streets away from the most touristy part it's quite calm and relaxing .
The food and tea can be quite expensive but it is what to be expected from a tourist attraction such as this one.
A rainy day at Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya-Gai☔️
The Hokuriku region of Japan gets the most amount of rain in the entire country. But they shouldn’t discourage you from visiting this beautiful area. One of the many beautiful places that you can visit in Hokuriku is the historic city of Kanazawa. It is the home of the great Maeda clan which was one of the most powerful in all of the country drunk the Edo period. The Higashi Chaya District in Kanazawa magnificently showcases well preserved buildings that are over hundreds of years old. I think the rain adds a rich brown color to the beautiful architecture of the buildings in this district.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
#artshunting
this time at 1-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan 920-8509!
beautiful place with full glass museum that can be seen from the outside. it is free for most exhibition except for those that are created by Leandro Erlich.
The famous swimming pool is one of them( which is not free) it’s an optic illusion of someone standing on top and another group of ppl across the glass below (the pool). quite artsy if you like such modern art exhibits.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
Address: 1 Chome-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-8509, Japan
Getting there: Take a bus to Hirosaka bus stop, from there it is just a few steps to the museum.
Highlights: The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits works of acclaimed contemporary artists from Japan and all over the world, and is among Japan's most popular art museums.
What I like the most of this museum is its unique architecture. The museum is comprised of a circular building, with no facade or main entrance. It was designed without a front or back to discourage its patrons from approaching the museum, and consequently its art, from only one direction. 😆
Opening hours: 9am to 10pm daily, closed on Monday.
Admission fee: 1200yen

This museum is great fun with quirky, varied and thought provoking exhibits. It is totally contemporary so don't be looking for a permanent collection of Monet's lily pads out back. A lot of interactive pieces and video installations so I would recommend this for family visits. The architecture of building inside and out is something to behold ! Stunning.
In 2024, I want to come back here ☺️
What are the best places to take in addition to the swimming pool in the 21st Century Museum of Art in Kanazawa? There is a super-fast cafeteria in the
Kanazawa Art Museum, as long as one hundred yuan! No mistakes, these rich appetizers (drinking) + a Western-style staple food + dessert drinks, and the environment is so elegant, in the art gallery, the appetizer is not the vegetable salad, this kind of species, seafood! Thick soup! Grilled meat! With this level of consumption, I feel that people around here are the best choice for lunch.
In addition to the net red swimming pool, the "grape" on the lawn is very suitable for taking many people's photos. You can use the mirror to play various creative poses.
