Moxi Catholic Church

The Moxi Catholic Church has a history of more than 100 years. When Western imperialism invaded culture and extended its claws to the Tibetan areas inland of China, the Red Army held a meeting here during the Long March.

The church in the mountains has a century-old church in the ancient town of Moxi, Hailuogou, built by the French missionaries at the time, and adopted a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. The church is still standing after a hundred years of storms and rains and fighting, which is a miracle in itself. Until today, many of the mountainous areas of Yunnan and Sichuan can still see many churches built by Western missionaries 100 years ago. With today's traffic conditions, it is difficult to penetrate these areas, not to mention that they really admire their dedication and pursuit of faith.

The church is located at the entrance of the ancient town of Moxi. It is not large in scale. It was built in the 1920s. The Red Army Long March held a famous Moxi meeting here, establishing the policy of fighting Japan in the north and opening to tourists for free.

The church was built in 1918 and requires tickets, 10 yuan. To be honest, when I found this Catholic church, I was pleasantly surprised. The ancient town of Moxi is not very famous. There are few tourists. In this place where Chinese people rarely dabble in, they can be dotted with Western colors, which really adds a different charm to the town. Add Chairman Mao Long March passed by here, stayed here for one night, and made the historical decision to force the Dadu River and take the Luding Bridge, which made the church a little more mysterious. The church was first created by the Romantic French missionaries, but in architectural style it is actually a product of the combination of things. You can see the blue bricks and blue tiles, the Chinese-style pavilion-shaped clock tower, and the gothic doors and windows, which really gives people an indescribable sense of strangeness. In 2004, the church was listed as a key cultural relics protection unit at the provincial level. The church also kept the former site of Chairman Mao's residence. It was in a small room on the second floor of the priest's room on the right side of the church. We climbed up and looked at it. It was very simple. The bedroom was a narrow bed. There was nothing else. Sighing that it was really hard. Although the church is small, it is still beautiful. The green trees in the small courtyard are accompanied by romantic European doors and windows, suitable for taking pictures, and it is worth visiting.

Moxi Catholic Church is a European-style landmark building. When Mao Zedong passed by here, he stayed here for one night. It also became one of the unique landmark buildings in Moxi Town. The snow-capped mountains and the beautiful pastoral scenery and strong national customs here. French church buildings form the landscape of Moxi town.

At the end of the ancient town of Moxi stands a Gothic Catholic church. Moxi was once a heavy town on the tea-horse road, attracting merchants of all ethnic groups and French missionaries. In 1918, French missionaries presided over the construction of the Moxi Catholic Church, completed the priest's house in 1922, and the clock tower and the Jingtang were completed in 1926. Although the architectural style of the church is European, the darts with the corners and the clock tower on the six sides can still see some Chinese temperament. But the Moxi Catholic Church is not famous because he is a Catholic church in Tibetan areas, but because of a meeting held here. Mao Zedong on the way to the Long March in 1935 had stayed in the priest's room, and on the same night he convened a meeting of Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, Wang Jiaxiang, Zhang Wentian, Qin Bangxian, Chen Yun, and Deng Xiaoping, who arrived in Moxi on the same day, called the "Moxi Conference" in the history of the Long March. The Moxi Conference laid the foundation for the Luding Bridge Conference on May 30 and served as a preparatory meeting. The next thing everyone knows is the famous Battle of the Luding Bridge.
