A very old lighthouse can be seen across from Hemingway's former residence and is open to the outside world. Key West is located in the important military fortress area of the United States and the construction of a lighthouse is essential to ensure the safe arrival of military and commercial vessels. The lighthouse opened in 1848 with a woman as a guardian. The lighthouse has since undergone a series of upgrades and has also added a Guardian dormitory. In 1969, due to technological advances, full-time guardians are no longer required. Now this once-sea sentry is a museum of Key West Marine Heritage. Key west art & historical society contains four museums: Custom House museum, this one, Fort East Martello museum and Tennessee williams museum, all related to the history of the Western Reef. Address: 281 Front Sreet, Key west Opening hours: 9:30-16:30 Tickets: 12$ for adults, 9$ for the elderly, 5$ for children, free for children under 6 years old (two$ can be reduced by going to four other museums with a small ticket)
