Photos of Priene

The ancient city of Baikamen is a small city facing the Aegean Sea. It prospered in the second century BC and is now famous for the relics of the kingdom of the Hellenistic period. The ruins are large in scale, interspersed with a large amphitheater that could seat more than 2,000 people, the ruins of many temples, the remains of a gymnasium and sports fields. Baijiameng was the capital of the kingdom era. At that time, the academic and artistic standards were as high as that of Alexandria in Egypt at the same time. In addition, Baijiameng was the birthplace of parchment, which was widely used as a substitute for paper in medieval Europe. In terms of art, the sculptures known as the Baikamen School are particularly prominent works in Greek cultural sculptures. The larger-scale and better-preserved Temple of Zeus, its completeness and delicacy are shocking, but it was destroyed in the nineteenth century. The Germans moved to Berlin as a whole, leaving only a pile of loess for Turkey.
