It was built in the second half of the 18th century by Sweden on a group of islands which were located at the entrance of Helsinki's harbour. This fortress is an especially interesting example of European military architecture of the time. As a result it has been included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites since the year 1991.

Contemporary art and architecture lovers should not miss the Kiasma, the contemporary art museum that is included in Finland's National Gallery in Helsinki. With fascinating displays of art and architecture demonstrating Finland's best and brightest, the Kiasma offers a unique view of modern day Finland. In addition to installations, audio landscapes and performance art, the Kiasma provides visitors a unique perspective of how art and business cooperate in Finland. The Finnish National Museum is located in the heart of Helsinki, particularly close to the Parliament Building. The museum has a medieval church-like exterior and is a fusion of an old Finnish church and castle-style building, designed by three Finnish architects. There is a statue of a stone bear at the entrance of the museum, which has become one of the symbols of the Finnish National Museum. On the ceiling of the entrance hall of the museum is Galen Carrera's large murals inspired by the narrative poems of Kalevala. It is a treasure of the town hall that cannot be missed.
