The Florian Gate is the gate of the main city of Krakow’s Old Town. Outside is Urn City, and inside is the Old Town of Krakow. A short walk through here is the Central Plaza. It can be said that the starting point for visiting Krakow is Here. There are also many vendors selling some local crafts, etc. It is very lively.
Walking from the central railway station to the old town, you will definitely pass the Florian Gate, and there is a defensive wall next to it. The city gate has a history of more than 300 years and is witnessing the changes of the times.
First, I explained a statue of a poet on the lawn and the church of Santa Croce next to it. The architecture here is simple and profound, and what you see is a scroll of medieval style paintings. Turn around the church to the square of the ancient theatre. After exiting the square, you will reach the main entrance of the ancient city, the Florian Gate, which is also the main gate. People named it after the patron saint of Krakow. The gate was built in 1307, and there are two small towers with golden statues on both sides of the gate.
The only way for the king from coronation to funeral, Florian Gate is a famous Gothic tower in Poland and one of the landmarks of Krakow’s Old Town. This rectangular tower was built in the 14th century as part of the defense system established by Krakow after the Tatar attack in 1241. The gate named after St. Florian became the main passage in and out of the old city. A bridge connects to the round urn city Barbican on the opposite side of the moat. The tower of the Florian Gate is 33.5 meters high. A baroque spire resembles the crown of the gate. It was built in 1660 and renovated in 1694, making the gate one metre taller. The south side of the city gate is decorated with a bas-relief of Saint Florian of the 18th century. The north side is a stone eagle carved by Zygmunt Langman in 1882 based on the design of painter Jan Matejko. Inside the city gate is a post-Baroque altar.
After the Urn City is the city gate, there is a statue of the Virgin Mary for prayer under the city wall, and you will enter the old city after crossing the city gate.
