What people are saying:

The famous Royal Exhibition Hall is one of Australia’s World Heritage Sites. The Exhibition Hall is adjacent to Melbourne’s Central Business District. At that time, the exhibition hall was built to hold the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880-1881. In 1901, the opening ceremony of the first Australian Parliament was held here. In the 20th century, a small part of the building and the side pavilions were demolished by fire.

Additional Information

The Royal Exhibition Building, the only Australian architecture listed on the United Nations World Heritage, was designed for international exhibitions held in Melbourne from 1880 to 1888. The building, with its overall Byzantine style, incorporates Italian Renaissance architectural elements. This important cultural landmark survived in the 1960s, when many people suggested it be dismantled because of years of erosion, and later voted down the proposal by the margin of one vote.
