Excellent gallery in Milan. Great pieces include Pieta by Lorenzo Lotto, Dead Christ by Andrea Mantegna, and Il Bacio by Francesco Hayez.
Worth a visit for its amazing collection of paintings. Don't miss the Caravaggio, some works by Hayez among many others.
Pinacoteca di Brera is an art museum containing one of the prime collections of Italian paintings obtained from churches and monasteries taken over during the Napoleonic rule. Though small in size, the Pinacoteca houses some of Italy's finest works of medieval and Renaissance art. There are nearly 40 rooms displaying great masterpieces such as Mantegna's Lamentation of Christ, Raphael's Betrothal of the Virgin, and Piero della Francesca's Madonna With Saints.
Milan's most worthwhile picture gallery is housed on the upper story of the city's still-functioning art academy. The collection is arranged in chronological order and include some real Renaissance gems, such as Andrea Mantegna's Dead Christ (shown in extreme foreshortening), Giovanni Bellini's Pietà, and Tintoretto's Miracle of Saint Mark. Other outstanding paintings include Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Piero della Francesca's Pala Montefeltro and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus.
