Built in 1856 and expanded by brothers Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov to include Dutch and French works, the popular gallery has been maintained by the city of Moscow since 1892. The art collections contain the works of master craftsmen from the Renaissance to the present, including Ivan Kramskoi, Illia Repin and Vasilii Perov. Not a stuffy, commercialized establishment, the museum is refreshing and delightful with interesting exhibitions by artists little known in the western world.
